I bought a second car for utility use; B6000, 1994, p/u, standard trans. Only when starting and running when the engine is cold, it runs very rough and difficult to idle. At normal operating temperatures the idle is somehwat okay and it seems to run fine. Also, the tach seems to jump up and down (even when the engine is at normal operating temps). Lastly, it appears the vehicle is running very rich as you can smell unburnt gas (moreso when engine is cold) and the tailpipe is packed with black residue. I suspected maybe an air type hose may have come loose or damaged thereby creating an uneven fuel mixture when the engine is cold. Couldn't find any hoses to speak of to support that theory. Can you assist?

I'll leave this open, check the air horn for cracks, that is the big plastic rubber thing that connects the air filter to the throttle. If it leaks air, it will run rough. Also, the plug wires will do it and the intake manifold sucking in air will do it, you can check that by pouring water on it or spraying wd40 on it, if it evens out when running, you have found a leak. Hope this helps.

I will try your recommendations. By the way, can the fuel pump relay have anything to do with cold performance problems?

A coolant tempurature sensor will make it run to rich if it is bad. run rough at idle, and produce black smoke, engine may stall out. it also causes retarded timing, slow idle speed, cold hesitation or stumble, poor fuel milage. good-luck!! if light is on check for problem code. this will guide you in the right direction. if no scanner, any auto parts store will scan for free. repost if need be. have a good day!!

also check iac valve, cause there are many things that can cause a to rich mixture. egr valve, tps sensor, etc.

I have a cold starting problem with a 1992 dakota. When temperature is below 40 degrees and engine is cold, acts like it's only firing on 1 or 2 cylinders for 20-30 seconds then runs fine.

I think you have a fuel pump pressure issue, the rough run is due to a very lean mixture (low fuel pressure). Try this: cycle the key three times to rum but do not start until the 4th attempt, if it starts and run normally replace the fuel pump.

Probably a head gasket. Water / antifreeze seeping into the cyllinder when it's hot/pressured up, and the plug won't fire until the water is blown out the exhaust, then it runs fine. Next time you hot start it, and it's running poorly, see if there is any white smoke coming out the exhaust.
