You don't! This is all computer controlled and dependant on a variety of sensors. Let me know if you need anything else.

The handbrake adjuster is under the centre console behind the lever. If its coming too high, check that the levers at the rear brake calipers are free and moving back to their stop position - they are prone to seizing up on older or little used cars. They can usually be freed off with a bit of lube and working the lever back and forwards. If that dosn't work, unfortunately you'll need new calipers. Do not adjust the handbrake cable unless the caliper levers are at their stops as this seriously reduces handbrake efficiency!

SOURCE: VOLVO S40 VVT VALVE

Very easy to swap the vvt valve, but that will not guarantee to rectify the problem, more than likely it will be the vvt pulley/timing unit, this will involve the timing belt coming off.
The vvt valve is located under the upper timing cover, remove the cover and you will see the valve situated on top of the head, undo the connector and remove the 4 bolts and the valve will come off, alittle bit of oil will come out on removal.
remove gasket and ensure the area is clean.
Re-fitting is opposite procedure, ensure a new gasket is fitted.
Hope this helps

Timing marks 2004 volvo s40 2.4 engine

Do not attempt this job unless you have the tool to lock the camshaft in position. Because it has a variable valve timing pulley you will not get it right without the tool.

Volvo s40 timing

Ignition timing is controlled by the engine management computer and is not adjustable. Valve timing is set at a fixed position when the timing belt is replaced and not adjustable.

2001 volvo s40 p1014

Code is for the VVT or variable valve timing. Was the timing belt replaced recently. If so the timing belt is not on correctly. If it just happened it could be the valve it self, wiring to the valve/corrosion on connectors. Check the oil level as low oil could be an issue. If the belt was not changed recently try changing the oil and adding a qt of Rislone to the oil. It is designed to free up sticky lifters and could free up the VVT solenoid. Worth a try.

Possible sources of fault code are as follows. The code is a fault in the VVT system (variable valve timing)

Faulty position
-camshaft belt has jumped out of place on the cogs
-defective reset valve
-mechanical fault in the Variable valve timing (VVT) unit
Faulty control
-defective camshaft position (CMP) sensor
Control too slow
-low oil pressure
-poor oil quality
-defective reset valve
-mechanical fault in the Variable valve timing (VVT) unit

Does the 2006 Volvo S40 1.8L petrol have cam belts or timing chain?

This model has one belt for the cam drive system, along with an oil-filled pretensioner. Additionally, these models have VVT (Variable Valve Timing) which consists of a PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) valve and associated plumbing to the hydraulic tappets. This system increases or decreases the amount of TDC overlap (cam timing) based on driving conditions resulting in enhanced performance and lowered emissions. The caveat is that one must be diligent about oil changes and usage of the proper weight oil to avoid clogging of the oil feeds to the tappets.

Im trying to replace camshaft gear on the 2001 S40 1.9l that was removed before the camshafts were locked down in synchro are there timing indicators on the back of the camshafts

There are DOWLS on the Front of the Camshaft. You have to have them LOCKED in the REAR before you put the belt back on or you will never get it right., These have a Variable Valve adjustment (and they cause issues. Additionally, the REAR Camshaft SEAL goes bad on this vehicle
