Find two small hoses, probably about as big around as a man's thumb and black. These are not wire bundles. They go into the firewall behind the engine, most likely on the passenger side. Take off the hose clamps and pull the hoses off the heater core ends, Buy yourself a short piece of pipe the same size as the heater core, put the hoses on either end and tighten down the hose clamps. Anchor it somewhere with zip ties so it does not flop around under the hood and you are done. Move south, going to be cold in there this winter. You are not going to have any defroster either..

I have a 1999 Kia sportage and the heat does not work but there is no leak in the core. Is there a bypass valve or something that stops the antifreeze from flowing to it or is the core just clogged up?

My PDF manual shows a coolant bypass pipe. I will try to look for it on my engine, later. If you can remove the hoses that go to and from the heater core, you could try to flow water through them. They may be hard to get at where they go to the core, but try to follow them to where they go in the engine compartment and remove them there. I also know of a situation many years ago in which the coolant lines were reversed going into the core. Once the system went empty during some repair, the core would not refill as there was trapped air, in the core, and the coolant would just flow in through the top pipe and run out the bottom, without flowing through much of the core.

1998 Kia Sportage heater return hose location....

Actually it does make sense. All you need to bypass the heater core is a section of pipe that can be used to connect the Heater core Supply and return lines together. All they actually do is make a loop using the heater core as the turnaround. This is normally 5/8 hose and any metal pipe section can be used as long as the hose fits on it and you can put a water clamp on it to hold it in place. In fact, if you have a control valve on your heater core line going into a piece of hose connected to the Firewall you can disconnect that and use it to connect the two lines together in a pinch. radiator flush kits come with a piece that attaches to these lines for flushing the system. Your supposed to cut the line and put this part in between the two pieces but you can just as easily disconnect the lines from the firewall and attach them with this piece. A Yard water hose slicing kit, metal, would work just as well as long as you have to correct size. Good Luck.

How do you go by replacing the heater core on the 2001 kia sportage

You start by disconnecting the battery and waiting for about 15-minutes because of the airbags.
Next you turn-off the airbag switches (driver & passenger side).
Then you begin removing the center-console,
the heater-core is deep in there.
Its almost a 2-day job.
Due to the complexity of work involved, I suggest you get the Hanyes manual. It is less than $20, and things are explained in details, with pictures/diagrams.

Sounds like the heater core has a leak. When you get low on coolant, the temp gauge will start to fluctuate.
