I have 2001 impala should I flush transmission fluid & filter myself or have it done?

Michael, If your vehicle is a normal automatic transmission it will have a torque converter. If you really want to attempt a complete flush, I will post links on how it is done, you will still have to change the filter to ensure a thorough job. I took mine to a shop for a flush and filter change. Costed me about $240 all said and done give or take. the '03 (and other) denali's have a big transmission reserve and i believe they take approximately 16 quarts of fluid in the system. the trans fluid is around 7 a quart i believe, and I recommend a flush to replace all the fluid with new fluid before changing the filter so that when you change the filter out, you are running new fluid through it. I don't know how to flush the system without their special tool that straight swaps the fluid as the ****** is running, so that will have to be done by a shop anyways. As for the filter swap, I believe the filter is about $29 and you'll need approx 7-8 quarts of fluid to replace when you drop the transmission pan.

All in all, in fluid alone you will be spending approximately $175. $29 for a filter. let the shop make a few bucks and have it done by pros. I know they get discount on the fluids, but I figure I still spent $35 more than doing it myself for an hour or two of work. Not a horrific deal to be honest.

I would start by having trans fluid & filter changed. (should be done every 30k/3yrs) Have shop flush it also.

If you have over 70,000 miles on car and have never had one performed on the car you would not want to have a flush done on the transmission. Transmission flushes done on vehicles that have never had one, with over 70k usally cause more problems then helping them. I have seen this on more than one car. Doesn't matter the make or model car, truck, etc. The flush done at high miliage causes nothing but problems. You may be ok for as long as 20,000 miles. The issue with a flush is it tends to stir up deposits in the tranmission that end up logged in the solenoids and valve body causing internal damage from the lack of fluid flow.

If the transmission fluid is dicolored you should drain the fluid and change the filter and fill with fresh trans fluid.

On every automatic transmission. you have whats called a tourque converter. If a flush and tranny fluid fill did not work before its not gonna work again. Your tourqe conver has gone bad or for some odd reason become detatched from the transmission housing. One thing that i know with all my experience you should never have your transmission flushed, especially more than once. Replacing your fluid is one thing but a tranny flush is just one thing auto manufactures should have never come up with. Also Check to see where the flush was done at. If it was done at a Jiffy lube, i doubt it was even done. BIG SCAM WITH JIFFY LUBE AND THERE TRANNY FLUSH SERVICE (check youtube for news reports). Now expect to pay a pretty penny for this becuase you have an automatic transmission. Normally on a manual, it would be your throwout bearing, but becuase the impala was never released with a manual tranny at least in that generation, your kinda stuck with taking it to a service shop. GO TO A GM SHOP. and ask them to fill the tranny with a special tranny fluit called DEXRON VI ONLY. Dexron is the only fluids that meets GM's standards.

You need to, at the minimum, change the fluid & trans filter. Easy proceedure. With van jacked up & blocked so it won't fall, use a large collection tray under trans pan & remove pan bolts. let oil drain into tray. use screwdriver to pry pan off. clean pan thoroughly & trans matting surface. Remove filter. You may need to adjust low rev band. Check with dealer or parts store for proper clearances. Put new filter on & tighten bolt[s]. Use new gasket & rebolt pan. Use gasket sealer on pan side only. You'll need 4-8 qts. of the proper tranny oil. Fill through trans. filler hole. Start engine & let warm up, check level & don't overfill or you'll have to suction out until level.

dont listen to this guy never flush your transmission thats a quick way to kill it. do a pan drop fluid filter change. refill with dexron 6. but ill tell u now ur problem is most likely the PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID in your transmission. may or may not throw a CEL. causes harsh shifting and slipping etc very common on the 4t65e trans. can happen any time and usually symptoms most obvious when engine reaches operating temp

75,000 miles isnt alot of miles,unless they were mostly city miles. If you aren't experiencing any transmission problems,i would drop the pan,change the filter and whatever fluid the pan holds,and hold off on flushing the entire sytem.The clutches and bands sometimes don't do well when shocked with ALL new fluid that contains a certain amount of detergent.The only real problems i have seen with the total flush is on Dodge trucks of the 90's up to even 2000 and some later models,the transmissions use a governor pressure sensor,and solenoid,and i have seen many of them set codes after the flush,and the components having to be replaced with new.Black fluid isn't a good indicator.Brown fluid,is better than black.And red fluid is the best.
