The ABS system is separate from the normal braking system (pads, rotors, master cylinder, etc.). It's essentially a computer that pumps the brakes during heavy braking to prevent, or at least reduce the possibility of a skid. The ABS system needs to be tested and repaired by a qualified mechanic.

the master cyl must be filled and bled before install.after installing new bled master cyl, bleed all calipers.once you are sure there is no air left in system then you will need a scan tool to perform a abs service bleed.if you do perform the abs service bleed with a scan tool the brake pedal will be soft and start to fade.

Sounds ridiculous maybe, but have you by any chance tried braking hard, at lower speed on a gravel road, just to see if you can pick up on which wheel is grabbing first. I recall a rear wheel cylinder partially seized with slight leak on rear of one of my vehicles, causing front end to whip over on braking. Only after hitting them hard at slower speed on gravel road, was I able to pick up on it.

Flexible brake lines are probably balooning out causing pressure not to build up, replace flexible to the calipers.
SOURCE: abs light on in land rover
you do not need antilock brakes to stop your vehicle. you know you don't have a functional ABS when the brakes do not pump on there own.
Sounds like you need to have your entire braking system checked. get your land rover put on a computer and see what codes come up. most autozone stores will do this for free.
Testimonial: "autozone and advance in my town both say they cannot read abs codes. So I'm left with the dealer or an indie shop I guess."
