Hi.
What is called generally ignition coil belongs to engine with mechanic or electronic distribution.
The coil is a device capable to generate an high voltage pulse that goes to the spark plugs.
Coil pack refers to the set of coils used in distributorless engines.
In this case a computer, and not the distributor controls a set of coils. Each coil supplies power to an individual spark plug or to a couple of spark plugs.
Coil and coil pack are in essence made in the same way. Both devices are composed of induction coils made of thin copper wired rolled thousand of times inside the coil. What changes is the way they are arranged and used in the different engine system.
Here an explanation of how distribution works.
Here the coil pack system in a DIS explained.
A way of testing coil pack is disconnecting one of them and observing if there is difference in the way engine is running.
Coils can also be swapped to observe if they work.
Unless you know what you are doing, it is better not to try this way of coil pack testing. DIS electronic ignited engines are quite sensible to misfire.
A coil is basically tested using a voltmeter to read the pulse. Reading Ohms can also tell if the coil is broken. Here the procedure.
Here generic coil testing tips.
