1986 olds cutlass cierra 2.5 liter motor runs hot

The car runs hot like 260 degrees. it has had a new head gasket and new thermostat and new cooling sensor and new belts .the problem didnt start till firestone replaced the water pump in jan. the car has only 42000 original miles .it builds up alot of pressure in the cooling system after you run it. it seems to run a little cooler when the air cond is off like 240. the cooling fan works good it always kicks on around 230 degrees so i think the water pump might be bad or badly installed and ive heard some of those cars have some kind of plate between the water pump and motor and that it helps the circulation of water . do you know if this is true or do you know what the problem may be????

If coolant can be detected inside the car, you need to replace the heater core. After it's replaced, the low coolant light should not come on after the heater core is replaced, and the system refilled. If it does, you need to check further. Go w/ the heater core for now, as it will fog up the inside of the car, and become a safety issue.

SOURCE: engine overheating-----1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.4 liter v/6

There seems to be an air pocket or no antifreeze in engine block. Try this method disconnect upper radiator hose and pour water directly into hose down into engine block until it full. when its filled reconnect hose and fill up radiator. as the vehicle warms up open bleeder valve on the thermostat housing and release air from system. open slowly and BE VERY CAREFUL WATER WILL BE HOT, bleed until you get a steady stream opening and cosing valve. However if all of this don't work. You may have a bad pump. Good Luck

Chanses are you got an air pocket in the system, there should be a bleeder on top of thermostat housing to bleed off the air, also might be one by the water pump. Its a common problem on them cars after you have drained the coolant to do thermostat or waterpump. Just bleed off the air and you should be good to go.

SOURCE: 1984 Olds Cutlass Cierra Body Frame matches what other cars.

I'm not sure that they are an exact match, but the equivalent GM vehicles for the Cutlass Ciera were the Chevrolet Celebrity, the Buick Century, and the Pontiac 6000.

1998 Dodge Avenger overheating on idle. New thermostat, no oil in coolant or coolant in oil. Fans and relays working. Coolant bubbles like geyser from thermostat housing, reservoir remains lukewarm..?

could very well be a head gasket ,just because you have no oil in water or whatever doesnt mean to say the gasket hasnt failed between a piston and a water jacket which is the most common type of failure so stop reading these sites looking for a quick fix ,this vehicle is a 1998 ,its old and the gaskets at this age are likely to fail with age .Off with the head and renew the valve seals ,reseat the valves new gaskets renew any suspect water pipes and change the timing belts and water pump if driven by the timing belt at the same time .then it will run for another 15 yrs with no problems

Overheating

A sticking thermostat will cause the Oldsmobile Cutlass to overheat causing serious motor damage. The thermostat controls your coolant system allowing enough coolant to flow through the motor keeping the motor cool. You can run your car without the thermostat to keep your car cool, but you will damage your heater as the coolant does not pressurize and get hot enough to maintain a hot temperature for your heater and defroster.

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Nutdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Putty knife
  • Razor blade
  • New thermostat
  • New gasket
  • Coolant
  1. Removal of the Thermostat
    • 1

Pull the lever to open the hood to reveal the engine compartment. Locate the top radiator hose.

    • 2

Unscrew the hose clamp with a flat head screwdriver or a nutdriver. Remove the hose completely to access the thermostat housing. You may lose some coolant when removing the hose.

    • 3

Access the thermostat housing by unbolting the two bolts on top of the housing with a socket wrench.

    • 4

Scrape the old gasket material off the surfaces of the housing until the surface is smooth.

    • 5

Remove the old thermostat by pulling it out with your fingers. Remember the exact position as you will place the new one in exactly the same.

    Installation of the Thermostat
    • 1

Place the new thermostat in the housing. Be sure it sits the same way the old one was positioned in the housing.

    • 2

Place the new gasket around the surface you previously scraped. Ensure that the gasket sits flush on the surface of the housing.

    • 3

Bolt the housing back together. Be sure the gasket is aligned correctly before you tighten the bolts.

    • 4

Attach the radiator hose back to the thermostat assembly and the radiator. Tighten the hose clamps. Tug the hose on both ends to ensure it has a tight fit.

    • 5

Refill the radiator with new coolant. You may have lost some coolant when you removed the hose.

I Have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix, For months now my temperature gauge has been running hot to nearly 260 degrees. The car has never officially overheated although the fans do kick in, In the last few...

What's chances that the temperature gauge or sender itself is wrong?
Is the heat exceptionally hot? What temperature is the heater dicharge when the gauge reads 260?
I think that the sender is not expensive, try that. An auto parts store could get you an inexpensive dial gauge that you might be able to install in place of the sender.

Have the cooling system checked for hydrocarbons, you may be dealing with a head gasket regardless of the fact of that you are not losing any coolant.

Engine temp gage spikes to 260 degree when

are you sure the cooling fans are working?
Is the coolant temp gauge telling the truth?
have you lifted the hood and heard the coolant bubbling into the overflow?
Or heard the tinging sound of a red hot engine?
If he did a liquid test with the dye,and it changed colors it should have changed very fast,
Another thing to think about if he was to take the fan belt off,and pull the thermostat housing off,and removed the thermostat,Now pour coolant into the thermostat hole to almost the top,Now start the car and see which side the bubbles come from, left or right, that will be the gasket that is leaking not both.

Overheating

the upper hose is suppose to be hot this lets you know that the thermostat is working like it should. if it were cold that would indicate that the thermostat was bad. i would say that it's the water pump because your not getting the circulation if it were a blockage your upper hose would still be cool as well.. hope this helps please rate...thanks
