Try hitting the brake off and on to see if the rpm changes when you do that with the car in park. If it does, you may have a ruptured brake booster. A fluctuating rpm while your car is in park with the brake on indicates a vacuum loss. Other things may cause a vacuum leak including the air conditioner controls inside the vehicle. Other things that cause this may be cruise control or your Air Conditioners high idle solenoid.

I just purchased a used 2004 Chevy Impala LS from a dealer with 46,000 miles and the car misfires at 4000 rpm's whether in park, neutral or driving on highway without any warning lights or codes....

check firing order of the plug leads as 2 may be crossed Have a fuel pressure test done on the fuel system check coil/s condition as it may be braking down at revs.

Mazda3 rpm's go up and down while driving

After I had the throttle body of my 2005 mazda3 cleaned, the RPMs would jump drastically - bouncing back and forth up to 16 times! The service manager seemed perplexed...and ultimately the solution was TIME. The bouncing gradually diminished and then stopped...can't remember for sure, but it was probably over about 6 weeks, maybe about 1000 miles.

My ford contour 2.0L Fi Automatic- can't go more

The vehicle has a rev limiter. Will it rev over 3500 when you drive it? If no, then I would guess that the exhaust might be partially restricted. But the engine computer won't allow you to free rev the engine that high in park and neutral.

2001 Chevy Malibu.. Tried to start car but get absolutly no response, no fuel pump hum, no lights, no clicks no sound from engine as if the car has no battery.. Removed the key and the RPM gauge shot up to...

Try shifting into neutral and pressing on the brake while turning your key. Sometimes when I'm in park my shifter doesn't make the switch that says I'm in park, if I turn the key...nothing....cause my car "thinks" it's in gear.

Why is my car red linning at 3500 rpm it cuts out?

you mean driving down the road? or sitting there trying to rev it? if you are just sitting there, its the rev limiter. NORMAL. now if you are driving down the road, there is a problem.
