You have a vacuum leak and probably an engine that idles very unstable. Inspect ALL vacuum hoses and look for leaks. These code trigger in conjunction with one another. There are not too many vacuum hoses on these newer engines. Remove the plastic cover from on top of the engine and grab a flashlight! If I remeber right, there is a problematic vacuum hose in between the engine and the firewall. Don't be afraid to poke around and move hoses. Check from one end to the other and I can almost gaurantee this is what you are going to find. Let me know if you need anything else. By the way, look on your hood or fenders, there should be a vacuum hose routing diagram.

Code P0171

P0171 - System Too Lean Bank 1 Share
1 ' Add Comment Possible causes
- Intake air leaks
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection
What does this mean? Tech notes
If the P0171 is combined with the P0174 code, it's very likely that the problem is caused by an intake leak. If there are no intake leaks, the next step is to replaced the air filter and clean the air flow meter. If the problem persist the front oxygen (O2) sensor may need to be replaced.
What does this mean? When is the code detected?
- Fuel injection system does not operate properly.
- The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too small. (The mixture ratio is too lean.)
Possible symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Excessive Fuel Consumption
P0171 Description
With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The Engine Control Module (ECM) calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.
In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) (2 trip detection logic).

Just had furel system clean, air filter, new spark plugs, coil pack and rear catilyic converter...left the shop went to get inspected...passed inspection runs fine but light came back on...it has 171 code...

Hi Glenn.

If the check engine light is back it means that there is a code stored. The first thing to do would be a code scanning to find out what code is stored. If you are located in US the scan can be done for free at the nearest Autozone. Elsewhere the choice is paying half an hour garage or purchasing an OBDII scanner and doing the checkup at home.

If the code is still P0171, then the ECM (the main computer) is reporting that there is too much air in the air/fuel mixture being injected in cylinders (P0171=lean mixture code-bank 1).

The parts to be checked are those that may result in a lean mixture. Lean mixture can also be reported because of a defective O2 sensor, but if no other code is shown this is not the most common cause for the problem.

Start checking the air sensors in the air intake. Check also the intake itself for leaks. Check also the vacuum system. Vacuum leaks aspire extra air in the engine and may trigger lean codes. There are more problems that may result in the same diagnostic trouble codes, but the two that I mentioned are fairly common. Check if additional codes are displayed. If you still have only lean codes start testing from vacuum and air intake sensors.

Regards.

P0171 and P0174 Left and Right bank lean trouble codes pulled from ECU. Check Engine Light illuminated.

P0171 = system too lean bank 1
P0174 = system too lean bank 2

The fuel/air mixture is too lean for the entire engine. The fuel pump pressure could be too low. The fuel pump pressure regulator could be at fault. There could be an air leak downstream of the MAF sensor. MAF sensor (hot wire type) could be dirty. Check for intake manifold vacuum leaks. The engine coolant temp sensor and/or the intake air temp sensor could be faulty (stuck at full hot mode).

Keeps giving P0171 reading any help

P0171- System Too Lean (Bank 1)

The adaptive fuel strategy in the vehicle's computer constantly monitors the fuel delivery system to make sure the engine is running at an optimum air to fuel ratio, which is 14.7:1. The computer adjusts injector pulse width to regulate the amount of fuel going into the engine. The oxygen sensors relay information to the Powertrain Control Module (computer), informing it of the oxygen content in the exhaust. This information is translated by the computer, and used to determine if more or less fuel is needed. The computer will then adjust fuel flow (and possibly other related engine operating characteristics), to keep the correct air fuel mixture. This loop continues as long as the engine is running.

A P0171 check engine light code is set when the computer has reached a rich calibration limit and can not add enough fuel to maintain the correct mixture.

Possible Causes:
The following is an overview of P0171 check engine light code possible causes.

Fuel System:

Leaking or faulty fuel pressure regulator
Plugged or dirty fuel filter or lines
Fuel pump weak or defective check valve
Injectors leaking or faulty
Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel
Leaking EVAP system components
Faulty FRP (Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor)

Air Intake System

Vacuum leaks
Contaminated, damaged or faulty Mass Air Flow sensor
PCV valve leak or stuck open
Air induction turbulance caused by wrong filter
Oil dipstick not seated
Air leaks after the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF)
Oil coated aftermarket air filter

Exhaust System

Any exhaust leak before or near the oxygen sensors

EGR System

Vacuum line disconnected from EGR System Module (ESM)
EGR valve, tube or gasket leak
EGR vacuum regulator valve leaking

Secondary Air Injection System

Mechanically stuck secondary air injection valve

I have a code reader and the code is P0171 P0174 System too lean. what makes the system too lean?

P0171 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 1
Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

P0174 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 2
Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

What Causes These Codes: Fuel injection system does not operate properly. The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too large. (The mixture ratio is too rich.) The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the engine Air/Fuel mixture ratio, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The PCM calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios. In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the PCM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the engine light. The codes is usually set when there is an intake leak after the air flow meter, before replacing any parts check for loose or broken hoses and intake gasket leak. On Ford some models dirty air filter, and dirty or faulty air flow sensor are the cause of the problem.

SES light on code P0171, 2005 Xterra, what to do??

P0171 is a lean oxygen sensor code for bank 1 on your engine.
It indicates that there is a lean condition (engine not getting enough
fuel or getting too much air) on that side of your engine.
Bank 1 is always the side of the engine where #1 cylinder is
located. In your case it is front-most cylinder on the right side
of the engine. (As viewed from the driver's seat)
So bank one is the passenger side.

If there are any other engine control codes, you need to fix those
first, as they may be the cause of the lean condition.

If that is the only code you are getting, then diagnostic testing
needs to be performed to determine the actual cause of the problem.

Possible causes are:

* Intake air / vacuum leaks
* Faulty / dirty fuel injector(s)
* Incorrect fuel pressure (Likely to cause both P0171 and P0174 at the same time)
* Low fuel volume (Pressure OK) (restricted fuel filter,etc.)
* Fauly Mass Airflow Sensor
* incorrect PCV hose connection
* Exhaust gas leaks
* Faulty Air Fuel Ratio Sensor

Engine check light read p0171 and p0420, noticed a leak of engine oil on cylinder 2 area of head gasket when checking the sparks plug, is that the cause?

P0171 code is described as: lean condition bank 1, oxy sensor 1. If your vehicle is a 4 cylinder, which I believe it is.. you have got a lean air/fuel mixture being found by the ecm(computer).This can be caused by several things. The first of which is a possible vacuum leak at or near the intake manifold. This can also be caused by a MAF(Mass Air Flow) sensor problem or even by something as simple as a clogged fuel filter. This lean condition could also be the cause of the P0420 :described as a catalyst efficiency problem. It would be best to have the vehicle taken to a reputable repair facility that is capable of engine performance diagnostics and have them run tests for these codes. The gasket you mention is most likely a valve cover gasket not the head gasket and would not cause these codes. Although you should have this leak fixed before it becomes a problem.

Hope this helps..
