NO! You do not need to remove the radiator for this job! DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE FIRST. You only need to remove the rearmost plate over the radiator, then the plastic radiator cover (both T20 Torx), then the electric fan (has two electrical connections and a folding ear on the driver's side). Lift the fan up, then fold the driver's side ear in and remove the fan. BE CAREFUL OF THE HOSES ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE - THEY GO INTO A PLASTIC DEVICE THAT IS VERY FRAGILE!!! Remove the engine cover (T20 Torx) Loosen the air intake tube at the intake, remove the vacuum tube from the intake tube itself, remove the air sensor connector. Then remove the top of the air filter box (2 screws) and remove intake tube and box top as a unit. One more bolt holds the bottom of the air cleaner in, remove it then work the bottom of the box out with its intake scoop. Take tension off the belt with a T60 Torx bit (clockwise), pin the idler pulley in the released position through the hole below the T60 fitting with the BMW tool or a small Phillips screw driver, mark the belt rotation and remove it, unbolt the alternator (with it's idler pulley) and support it. Remove the electical connector and batt cable from the back of the alternator. Take alt to workbench. Transfer the idler pulley and front pulley if necess to the new alternator (needs an air impact wrench on the alt pulley). Install is the reverse of above. Torque on alt bolts to engine is 15lbs. Torque on B cable is 10lbs. Reconnect the battery. Clear any computer faults. Reset Active Steer (if have) by starting car, turning full left, then full right. Shut off. Restart. Faults should be gone.

How do I replace the alternator

Hello, Alternators are a car part that can be very costly to fix because of labor costs. But with an hour or two of time and a little elbow grease, you can do it yourself. And to replace the alternator follow the following steps below:

Step 1. Pull your car into the garage or your work area. Turn the car off and let it sit for a while to cool.

Step 2. Begin by disconnecting the negative cable of the battery.

Step 3. Remove the serpentine belt from the pulley on the alternator. Do this by using a socket wrench to turn the serpentine automatic belt tensioner so that it allows slack in the belt. Then simply slip the belt off the alternator pulley.

Step 4. Locate and disconnect all the mounting bolts on the alternator, use a vehicle specific manual if you have any trouble.

Step 5. Disconnect all wires attached to the alternator then remove the alternator from the car.

INSTALLING NEW ALTERNATOR.

Step 1. Slide the new alternator into place. Do not worry about the serpentine belt yet.

Step 2. Replace the bolts that held the previous alternator to secure the new one in place.

Step 3. Attach the wires to the new alternator the same way they were attached to the old one.

Step 4. Adjust the serpentine belt tensioner the same direction you did in Section One to put slack in the belt. Wrap the belt around the pulley of the new alternator and then remove the socket wrench from the automatic belt tensioner.

Step 5. Inspect the belt to be sure it is not snug and follows the path required in the pulley and belt configuration diagram.

Step 6. Hook the negative battery wire back to the negative terminal on the battery.

How many labor hours will it take to install a new alternator in my jeep grand cherokee?

How to Replace an Alternator (DIY Time: 2.5 hours)
Complexity: Moderate

Parts:
1. Alternator - $151.95

Tools:
1. Combination Wrench Set
2. Screwdriver
3. Multimeter
4. Serpentine Belt Tool
5. 3/8 in. Drive Ratchet
6. Socket Set

Steps:
Step 1 Open the hood and locate your vehicle’s alternator.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.
o Tip: Always make sure the struts on the hood can fully support the weight of the hood so that it does not close on you while working. The use of a hood prop can securely hold it in place.

Step 2 Using your digital multi-meter, check the battery voltage. A dead battery will usually have less than 9 volts. This would not be enough power to start most vehicles.

Step 3 To verify that your alternator is bad, make sure your battery is fully charged and can pass a load test.

Step 4 With the good battery installed, connect your digital multi-meter across the battery terminals with the engine turned off. A good battery should read between 12-13 volts.

Step 5 Start your engine and read the digital multi-meter’s output. The voltage should rise near 13.5-14.5 volts.

Step 6 Using an open end wrench, disconnect the battery’s negative cable.
o Tip: When disconnecting battery cables, be sure to always disconnect the negative cable first and do not allow it to come in contact with the negative terminal post while working on the vehicle.
o Tip: Wrap the battery cable with a shop towel and pull it away from the battery terminal.

Step 7 Disconnect the power and ground wires on the back of the alternator paying close attention to where each wire connects. Disconnect the wiring harness connector.
o Tip: Check for a loose wiring harness connector, cracked wire insulation, and corroded terminals. Replacing the wiring harness may be necessary.

Step 8 Loosen the alternator bracket bolts, and alternator adjusting bolts or alternator belt tensioner so that you can remove the alternator drive belt.

Step 9 Using the proper size socket and ratchet, remove the alternator mounting bolts, spacer (if equipped), adjusting bolt, lower pivot bolt (if equipped), and the alternator.

Step 10 Install new alternator.

Step 11 Using the proper size socket and ratchet, loosely install the alternator mounting bolts, spacer (if equipped), adjusting bolt and lower pivot bolt (if equipped).

Step 12 Install the alternator belt.
o Tip: When installing the alternator belt, make sure the alternator belt is fully seated in the groove of the pulleys.

Step 13 Pull the alternator until the alternator belt is tight.

Step 14 Tighten the alternator mounting bolts while gently moving the alternator unit to achieve proper alternator belt tension.

Step 15 Reinstall the power and ground wires to alternator. Install the wiring harness connector.

Step 16 Push down in the middle of the alternator belt to check belt tension. If the alternator belt moves more than a half an inch, it is too loose, adjust the alternator belt to proper tension before proceeding to next step.

Step 17 Now that the alternator belt has been installed and adjusted, reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check the battery voltage to verify proper alternator charging.

Step 18 Turn off the engine and recheck the alternator belt tension. Readjust the alternator belt tension if needed.

Good luck (remember comment and rated this).

How to remove the alternator

Before the step-by-step instructions I want to make sure this is the Alternator that needs to be replaced and not something else. This will save you money for an Alternator you don't need and save you time for replacing a good alternator.
Start the vehicle. With the engine running - disconnect the Negative Cable from the Battery. If the Engine dies - it is the Alternator. If it doesn't die - it is not the Alternator. I have had plenty of people who have replaced perfectly good Alternators only to find out it was something else.
Step-by-step:
1. Disconnect the Negative Cable from the Battery.
2. Using a 15mm closed end wrench/bar - Rotate the Belt Tensioner towards the front of the vehicle and remove the Surpentine Belt off the Alternator. You do not have to take it completely off the vehicle.
3. Remove the bolt holding the top of the Alternator Mounting Bracket to the Engine Intake.
4. Remove the bolts (plural) holding the outside of the Alternator Mounting Bracket to the Alternator Mounting Plate.
5. Remove the bolt holding the top of the Alternator to Alternator Mounting Bracket.
6. Remove the Alternator Mounting Plate.
7. Remove the the Altenator Mouting Bracket.
8. Rotate the Alternator towards the rear.
9. Discoonect the electrical connections (plural), including the nut holding the wire on.
10. Remove the lower Pivot bolt located at the bottom of the alternator.
11. Remove the alternator.
12. Installation is reverse of above.

Bad alternator

First, disconnect the Battery.
Then using a suitable pry bar or 1/2inch drive flex bar, pull the spring loaded idler pulley back, you will see the pulley if you look at your drive belt at the top, closest to you,(looks like an aluminum casting with a steel wheel connected to it. and you will see a small square opening where you place the drive end of your flex bar into.
Once you have rotated the idler pully far enough, you should be able to slip the drive belt off the pully.
Now, look at the rear of the Alternator, you will see a wiring block, maybe three wires coming from it, use a small screw driver to pry back the little locking tab on the plastic wiring connector,,(just as it enters the alternator)and pull the connector out.
If there is any other wires coming from the alternator, just disconnect them(if you have to remove any bolts to do this, make sure you re-connect the nuts back onto the connectors after removing the wire)after you have disconnected the wires,,you should be able to unbolt the alternator from it's support bracket.
P.S. if you do not have strong hands,,it would be wise at this point to ask a friendly neighbor to help you at this time.
After removal of the alternator, take the alternator down to your local parts store and ask them to test it for you(most parts supply stores will do this for No Charge) and if you need another alternator they will take the old one as a rebuildable core and take some money off your bill.
The re-installation is the reverse of the removal, while you are at it, check the condition of the alternator drive belt, if it is worn, or frayed at the sides,,or if you look at the driven surface(this is where you see the grooves) and you notice small cracks,,then you should replace the belt.
You should replace the belt anyway,if you can afford too,,,they are pretty cheap and doing so can save you some heart ache in the furure.
