Starter replacement on 99 avalon

Car would not start and was clicking when trying to start. After getting it to start several times this way, the last time when I turned off engine it would not stop running. The only way I could get it to stop was to unhook battery cable.. Is this the starter and how hard is it to replace.

SOURCE: how do I change the starter on a 99 avalon

Could be your starter, sounds like your starter soloinoid(pulls starter gear into flywheel) might be defective. First it will not pull gear in, then if it sticks in your car could keep starting even if the key was turned off .
without looking at the car I could'nt say how hard it would be to change. It has been my observation that newer cars are much more difficult to change

Turn key and makes clicking noise and it doesnt start. i turn the key several times then it starts. is this the starter or can it be the starter contacts?

Most likely the starter, a common problem on these, before replacing it make sure the battery is good and all connections are clean and tight. The starter contacts, actually solenoid contacts, are usually the cause, the contact parts are available at most toyota dealers but a lot have stopped selling them, replacing the contacts requires removing the solenoid and taking it apart which may cost about the same as a rebuilt starter after the labor cost involved.

When i turn my key, i hear clciking and finally the car turns on after about 20 turns. sometimes contact is made, but not all the way and sounds like it gets stuck in the middle and stops, so i have to...

this is caused by a bad starter, i would also check to make sure the battery connections are clean and tight, this is common on forgein cars, you get a click and as you kepp cycling the key it makes the connection inside the starter and starts, 99% of the time its a bad starter it will get to a point soon where it doesnt start anymore and you will get stuck. hope this is helpful.

Avalon won't start, fast clicking noises

Sounds like a dead battery issue. If someone can jump start you with battery cables connect red to red post on battery and black to your car frame or other ground. If the car starts easily it indicates a discharged battery. Then you need to determine why the battery is discharged. If you can drive to a local autoparts store they can use a machine to do a battery and charging system diagnosis at the curbside. Autozone, Advance, or Oreilly all do this. If the battery is the original from the car when purchased it is probably time to replace it. If its a new one (2 years or less) the culprit may be the alternator. The clicking noise is a dead give away that its a battery or alternator issue. The clicking by the way is the starter trying to engage and turn motor over to crank it. Its not getting enough power to turn the engine over (a tough task) and is clicking.

I have a 97 Toyota Avalon XLS that won't start, had a new battery installed, still makes clicking sound when I try to start. After a few tries it may or may not start.

hi it does sound like the starter is stuck, there could be a way to free it and find out for sure if it is u/s, what you have to do is, locate starter on your vehicle, depending on its location you can try tapping it with a small hammer or a long bar of sorts, at the same time get someone to turn the ignition at the same time while you are tapping the starter, this should free the solenoid and then thestarter should work, if it does, turn the motor off, and try again and see if it works if it does your ok, if not then try the above again, if you have to do it every time you turn the motor off then you will need to replace your starter....hope this helps please vote thanks

99 avalon starts runs fine shut off wont start unless jumped then continues to start several tinn=mes until this happens again?

Sounds like either the voltage regulator or altenator is bad. Most part stores will test altenator, battery, and starter for free in the vehicle or out. Double check relays and cable connections

Try smacking the starter with a blunt object ( hammer or something ) Smack it several times while cranking. It may free up. Listen for the click at the starter. Its prabably a bad starter. Common symptom your describing. If it does start replace the starter.
