Ignition wont start the car when hot outside. U have to turn the key to the start position and hold for a few seconds or even crank or turn turn key the key past the start position to sometimes get it to start.

My 2006 PT Cruiser has the same problem! When hot in the cab it won't start but after it is cool outside it starts up without missing a lick! When it is hot and you turn the key you get nothing but do have power to lights, radio, etc. weirdest thing ever and nobody knows why! We have had the ignition module replaced and have a new battery. This one has stumped everyone. Any suggestions folks?

It could be the neutral safety switch if it is an automatic transmission car. If it is a manual transmission car their is a safety switch in the clutch pedal. If these check out ok then check the starter solenoid

SOURCE: key won't turn in ignition

The lock cylinder in the steering column has to be changed. I have see these wear out.

To avoid having a new key combination for the ignition, when you go to the dealer and order new part, tell them that you want to have it in the same combination code as the original. You will have to loan them a copy of the key to have this done.

The last step is you will need someone who knows how to change the cylinder in the steering column. In many models of cars, this is an involved job.

SOURCE: 1999 chrysler 300m wont crank, code P0340

Sounds like the timing belt broke. Unfortunately this vehicle was not equiped with no contact valves so if that is the case you will need to have the engine and Head rebuilt. If the crank position sensor can't sense the position of the crank it should shutdown the electrical to keep you from damaging your engine.

Key wont go in to lock position. Now, battery has 13 volts but car wont start all lights come on 2006 monte carlo

To remove key (lock position), the transmission needs to be in PARK.

To start (engine crank), the transmission must be either in PARK or NEUTRAL.

Try apply parking break, put transmission in neutral and turn ignition key. If engine does not crank, turn and hold key in start position then move transmission selector to see if there is a transmission select position where it does crank.

Car wont start after leaving key in ignition,ie went to start car, but phone rang, key in ignition, now wont start.this has happened my wife on several occasions. starts fine on a push

Check the fuse box for the starter relay, and pull out to check pins for corrosion / bad contact. The fact it start on a bump with the key on leads me to suspect the start / crank position of the electrics. Get a knowledgeable person to run through the crank circuit with a meter, also check the condition of earth straps and starter cables. Could be the ignition switch is faulty?

1998 s-10 security light

If the security light is hot or flashing when the key is in the on position, most likely the ignition key tumbler housing has failed.

You can try resetting the pass code by turning the ignition switch to the on position (do not crank or start the engine). Leave the key in the on position for 10 minutes. Turn the key to the off position, wait 5 seconds and turn the key to the on position again and leave it on for 10 more minutes. Cycle the key to the off position again for 5 seconds the back on for a final 10 minutes. Once the final 10 minutes is complete, turn to the off position again, wait 5 seconds and now turn the ignition on and to the start position. The pass code has now been reset and it should start. If the reset does not work you will have to change the ignition key tumbler housing that contains the key code resistor.
Good luck

I replaced the battery in my 2010 Nissan Sentra. Now the engine will crank for a few seconds and then quit.

This sounds like an ignition switch failure.

Can you get your car to an auto parts store? If so, borrow their OBD scanner (most have them to loan out, provided your car is in their parking lot - they won't let you take it home with you) or find a friend with one. The scanner should tell you exactly what's going on.

How do you replace an ignition switch in a Lincoln Navigator?

Don't believe it would be the ignition switch. It sounds like the starter relay may be stuck in the on position. Find the starter relay and pull it out. One terminal would be hot at all times-use a test light grounded to engine block and probe the relay terminals. Should only have one terminal showing power. Now have someone hold the key in start position. Now you should have two terminals showing power, and when key is released to the run position, the second hot terminal should stop showing power.
If it works like this, try a new relay, or a known good one. If second terminal still shows power without key being in start (cranking) position, then it may be the ignition switch or the wiring and connections between the switch and the starter relay.
You will keep burning starters out till fixed. Starters that are run more than a few seconds at a time will get too hot and burn out.

Car won't start without a jump but battery okay

wont crank or wont start.??
no car starts , if it cant crank. (unless push starter (M/T magic)
that is not a trans sensor its the PRN switch.
ill answer for, wont CRANK !
it wont crank even with a good battery (charged) or jump started.
1: bad start
2: bad wires to same.
so hot wire the starter small wire, the key start line is tiny.
cranks. , starter good, no crank starter bad or cables bad.
if it cranks hot wired, then the key line is dead.
easy, huh?

Car wont start..after i stuck wet keys in ignition

Give the key-hole a few days to dry out. There are electronics inside the key-hole that sense the key's position and the immobilizer chip within the key. If these short out, or any other circuits with them, the car won't start/run properly.

Citroen c8 wont start when its cold

probably your crank position sensor is bad. it determines the position of crank and adjust ignition timing. when timing is off it wont start.it cant catch. this is unrelated to outside temperature.
