Transmission speed sensor is located on the passenger side you will need to raise the vehicle SECURELY on a level surface set the parking brake. then remove the passenger side tire and look in and you will see a motor mount, it is easier to remove that speed sensor on the transmission if the mount is removed. Key thing is be careful and cautious if it seems like too much at any time bring it to a professional.

VSS vehicle speed sensor replacement

There are vehicle speed sensors on all four wheels and usually another on the transmission. Depends on why you are replacing and what system you are having trouble with. The ABS uses the four wheels to gauge speed for stopping and traction control purposes. The sensor on the transmission (output speed sensor) is the one that feeds data to the computer for the speedometer. Take off your tires and the speed sensors are easy to find behind the brake rotors. The trans mounted sensor will be easiest to find by having the new part in hand and finding the corresponding sensor to match.

My service engine soon light is on and it reads that the engine speed signal circuit is the problem, what should I do!

This is normally caused by the Crank Sensor. The Engine Speed signal is given by the Crank sensor, not the vehicle speed sensor. Most people get confused and replace the speed sensor instead.

So to resolve your problem you will need to replace the crank sensor. The engine speed sensor code is always related to the crank sensor failure.

Thanks Jay!

CANT FIND WHERE THE SPEED SENSOR IS NO MY 1995 OLDSMOBILE AURORA

hi , their is two different speed sensors on your vehicle one is the input speed sensor which is inside the transmission and the transmission will have to be removed to replace it the other one s the output speed sensor is located directly above the passenger side trans-axle shaft. your input sensor is the sensor which tells the transmission when to shift and the output speed sensor tells the speedometer what it should display and both those parts are fairly cheap they are around 15-25 dollars but just remember if your input speed sensor is bad it is gonna cost you a minimum of 1000 dollars to have a mechanic fix as the transmission needs to be removed hope this is what you needed

Abs light and brake light came on wont turn back off

There is a sensor at the top of the rear differential for the ABS system. That sensor went bad and replacing it took care of the problem. What caused mine to go bad was apperantly water got into the differential when launching and loading my boat. check to see if gear lube needs to be replaced also.
The answer above is perfectly correct. When the ABS sensor on the diff goes bad the speedo no longer will work, the odometer stops recording mileage and both brake and ABS light comes on. You also loose O/D or "Lock-up" in the torque converter. The sensor is inexpensive and can be changed in about 30 mins. Good Luck!
I second the second answer :) My ABS light was on, my BRAKE light was on, my CHECK ENGINE light was on, my SPEEDOMETER wouldn't work below 35 mph, then quit working alltogether. Once the speedomenter quit working the odometer and cruise control quit working. I replaced the rear differential mounted speed sensor ($33) and then reset the CHECK ENGINE light by disconnecting the positive battery cable for a couple of minutes. EVERYTHING then worked.
Replace rear differential speed sensor as follows:
a) remove parking brake cable bracket (1/2" socket)
b) remove speed sensor bolt (9/16" deep socket)
c) remove metal speed sensor cover
d) remove speed sensor from rear differential housing (use channel lock pliers, twist gently back and forth while applying upward pressure. Once the speed sensor has a small gap between it and the rear differential housing, insert a flat-blade screwdriver and gently apply upward pressure while gently twisting speed sensor back and forth.
e) disconnect speed sensor from speed sensor cable
f) lubricate new sensor with WD-40, insert into rear differential housing. It will NOT go in all the way by hand, so do NOT force it nor hit it with anything made out of metal.
g) replace metal speed sensor cover
h) Insert speed sensor bolt and tighten LIGHTLY until a small amout of pressure is felt. Tap speed sensor with rubber hammer until it pops into housing. Finish tightening of speed sensor bolt.
i) replace brake cable bracket, replace 1/2" nut and tighten
j) disconnect positive battery cable for 2 minutes, reconnect positive battery cable
h) start vehicle, enjoy,
