1992 Subaru Legacy , FWD, Automatic Trans., I have a leak from the Gasket that goes in between the Transmission and the Differential. Appx. what kind of price should I be expecting a transmission shop to charge to have this gasket replaced? Could there be a reason why this gasket would have started leaking, besides it probably being the same age as the car? Any info. provided is appreciated, I really need my car fixed but I don't want to get taken advantage of or be screwed over. Thank You Everybody and Anybody!

Don't be surprised if there is no gasket there
during manufacture , they use adhesive sealant on properly machined surfaces
the bolts could be a bit loose
cost will be the quotes you get from accredited specialist transmission shops but don't be surprised it they include removing the power train ( engine / transmission to do the job as that may be the quickest way to do it

SOURCE: will 1999 subaru engine fit in 1997 subaru legacy?

Yes as long as the Motors are the same. You might need to have the computer out of doner car. Doors are suppose to fit 96 to 99.

SOURCE: subaru legacy fuse 1995

The fuse is only for when you are running a smaller sized spare tire. You have to put one in when you put the spare on to make the car FWD only. Go only far enough to get the tire replaced. Do not drive the car extended distances in FWD.

SOURCE: Cause of noise in front differential of 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback.

there is a plug on the shaft-side of the differential. Using a ratchet remove the plug and with the engine OFF, stick your finger inside the hole and you should get fluid just below the threads of where the plug goes in.

92 Subaru Legacy 4 speed automatic transmission awd stops an rocks back in forth when manually placed in first gear, why?

I suspect that you have higher mileage on the transmission and its a worn out the first gear clutch pack. I would get it checked by a proper transmission repair shop.

What to do with my subaru legacy's transmission fluid leak

You don't say if its manual or Auto? I'll pretend its auto and ask if the oil is coming from the join between the trans housing and the engine. If it is then the torque converter shaft seal is failing. This is a job for a knowledgeable person and a trans removal. If its at a drive shaft point, again its a job for a mech. If you give us a bit more in detail maybe we can help. Its an old car and if its done 100k plus miles then its about time for seal failures.

What kind of Transmission Fluid goes in a 1990 Subaru Legacy?

Is it an automatic? if yes use dexron III or use synthetic oil for it if it's a standerd transmission it will depend on weather conditions in your area. Colder climates use lighter grade of oil. So let me know if you have a standard and I can give you the oil viscosity.

I have a leak in my 97 automatic subaru legacy and need to add some fluid to my transmission just to get it to a shop. It doesn't say in the manual or on any site I've been to where to add it or what kind...

The type best used is "Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid Type-HP or IDEMITSU ATF HP. you add it through the dip stick hole. You may also wish to add a transmission leak oil to swell the gaskets and stop the leak add it the same way if you choose to use it. both of these should be available at your local auto parts store like NAPA.
