When the battery light is on it means the engines alternator is not charging the battery, this is either the alternator malfunctioning or a wiring problem, Kragen or Autozone can run the charging system test on the alternator and it is free.

ABS light comes on, traction light, and airbag light. The radio turns off, and everything dims. Then the car dies & won't restart. Its not Alt or Batt.

There should be a fuse between your battery and alt. If the fuse is blown, the current isnt getting back to the batt.

Something like this also happened to my brother in his Jetta, Im not saying its the same thing but his timing belt gave out.

Open the hood. Lift the battery cover, then there is a little black box on top of the battery. Open it. bet it is burnt and melted. Do NOT take it to the dealership. You'll pay $600 . You need an alternator cable and a new fuse block. 30min fix.

Hello - I just bought a 2004 Jetta - day one - mil light came on. Car runs fine. What could it be? 2 mechanics checked the car over before I bought it and carfax said it was one owner no problems.

Have VW check it out. I had just got my 04 GLI with 70,000 miles when the light came on. The thermostat triggered the light and so I had the whole timing belt, thermostat, and water pump service. Worth the money.

Air bag light stays on.

It should only be dealt with not just certified mechanic but electronics expert at volkswagen itself. in this case i want to say, it needs Light Procedure reset! or priority reset. Mainly it is a code error in the jetta!

Hope it helps.

Haven a hard time changing my low beam for my 2004 tdi vw jetta

This should not be very difficult. Remove the back cover of the light. Twist the old bulb and pull out. Remove plug. plug new one in and twist into place. Replace cover.

The battery side is a very tight squeeze, you may need to remove the battery. But, I was able to do it by just taking off the battery cover.
