Odds are that you have a wheel speed sensor that isn't reading correctly. Usually it's a front wheels speed sensor [but it can be any of them] that is sending an incorrect signal to the ABS control unit. This erroneous signal makes the ABS system think that one of the wheels is locked up and activates the ABS system as a result. You'll need to have someone hook up to the ABS system with as scan tool to determine exactly what is going on but my bet is on one of the sensors. This is a safety issue as it can increase your stopping distance so I would have it checked out as soon as possible. Hope this helps you find your problem!

Thanks mclaen, I'll have it checked, it's beyond my driveway mechanic ability.

One of the speed sensors are bad. It might be hard to tell which one unless you have a scanner. Do you ever see an abs light on?

  • precisbio Jul 18, 2010

No the ABS light never comes on. I think I'll take it to someone to check it out, it's beyond my expertise.

I have a 2004 Pontiac GrandPrix. When coming to a slow stop, abs starts pulsating. Only with slow speed stops, when you are on the brake pedal lightly. No warning lights on, and I pulled the front...

Its the ABS Computer, it is getting to be a common problem now, I have had that happen to me and I almost hit a car. I would unplug the abs until you can get it fixed, the plug is in the box that the brake lines run to from the master cylinder. The ABS light will be on but its better than rear ending someone.

ABS brakes not working

If you can feel the pedal pulsating and the light turns on the Abs is doin its job. if you want a better stop you could try a brake pad upgrade to ceramic pads and for even more stoping power add an after market drilled and sloted rotors.

Anti lock brake system

If the light is not on it may not be the ABS that is pulsating on slow braking but it may be that your have warped brake rotors, even if the rotors were replaced with the pads the new ones may be warped already, we always check new rotors on a brake lathe before installing them because we have seen this happen many times
