Brake shoe removel:
Depress and turn the retainers for the
hold-down springs and pins to remove them from each shoe. Slide the brake shoe assembly--including the
shoes and springs--down so you can disengage the top ends of the shoes
from the cylinder and tilt them to lift them past the retaining plate.
Unhook the lower retracting spring from the
front brake shoe to disconnect it. Spread the shoes apart at the bottom
to remove the adjusting screw, the screw's retracting spring and the
adjuster lever. Remove the front brake shoe.
Pull the parking brake cable spring back with diagonal cutting pliers,
grip the cable with the pliers without cutting it, unhook the cable from
the parking brake lever and remove the rear brake shoe with the lever.
Disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe by spreading the
retaining clip with a screwdriver and removing the clip and its spring
washer.

Hi,
DRUM BRAKES
Brake Drums
REMOVAL
& INSTALLATION
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!
Ok, this is what I should of said to be more specific - replacing rear brakes on a 97 ford contour 2.0ltr. Having problems with fitting the springs. What is the trick to getting them back on, is there an order do so. I have done many rear brakes but it seems like you have to do a special order or it won't work, but this is driving me nuts, I either keep bending the springs, or fighting the self adjuster. Do you have a diagram of installing? The self adjuster is on top. I get it all back toghether with bent springs trying to get them in there holes right. Do you have a diagram also of how the springs should go. This should of been my question. Please help.
Thanks for your response!!

The above information is directly from the manual.Let me provide you with more details :-
Start replacing the shoes by working on one brake assembly at a time,
using the other side as a reference for re-installation. Remove the
brake drums by taking the retainers off, if equipped, or pulling them
off the wheel assembly. If the drums seem stuck, pull the rubber plug
off the backing plate and use a screwdriver and a brake-adjusting tool
to rotate the star wheel on the shoe-adjusting cylinder to back off the
shoes.
Make sure not to breathe any of the brake lining dust
inside the brake drum assembly. Old brake lining contains asbestos,
which is known to cause cancer. Spray the assembly with brake parts
cleaner and wipe the dust and chemical with a shop rag. Now you can
remove the brake, hold down the retracting springs using a hold down and
spring tool. Lay and organize the springs on a clean surface.
With
the springs removed, lift the brake shoes off the backing plate just
enough to remove the cylinder adjuster. Then disengage the parking brake
cable from the lever attached to the brake shoe. Note that the set of
brake shoes are of different size. Compare them with the new ones, so
that you install them in their correct place.
Thanks!!

ok, I do appeciate the general solution, but on the particular ford, does any manual list a special pattern to puttin the hold down springs back on, ie: the tensior spring, I think has to go on after the top blue sping, but I am looking for the correct "trick" since I have tried multiple ways, and still bend springs or have a hard time. I hope I explained that a littl better. Also, do you have a pic with the drum off showing all the springs?
