Most cars had one coil in the past,then switched to coil packs with two or three coils bunched togeter to provide enough spark for todays electronic ignitions....and Ford went one further for some of their engines and put an individual coil on top of eack spark plug,and they are compact and ther are no plug wires to deal with....they have one hold down bolt,unplug connector carefully,and then pull and wiggle till it pulls off... and underneath you will find spark plug....they can be expensive....but they do make them aftermarket....or replace bad with salvage yard part....good luck....Lee
I believe you are referring to ignition coils. A coil is an electrical device which basically converts 12volts (which is what a car battery puts out) and amplifies the voltage anywhere up to around 50,000 volts in order to ignite the spark plug which in turn burns fuel.
