1989 Isuzu Pickup XS(2.3 L-5 speed)--just bought the truck about a month ago from a certified mechanic who did a lot of work on it to update it. apparently after he completed the work he let it just sit for a while(?how long) which may explain some of the problems i am having. around town it runs smooth as silk. at speeds above 40 mph there is a hiccup or **** as though it is misfiring. it doesn't happen continuously but seemingly when it wants to. it has done this since i have had the truck. i have driven it no more than 1000 miles. at first it was only happening at speeds of 50 or above but now at 40. it is not the plugs. took out the plugs and they looked almost new with no carbon, just a little white deposit. i replaced them anyway but no change. what do you think? very annoying. also,on a cold start in the morning i tap the gas a couple of times and then crank the engine but i have to tap the gas a couple of more times to keep it running. it does the same thing if i leave it for,say,4 or more hours. the carburetor looks extremely clean and the air filter is brand new. vacuum lines have been replaced as well as the oxygen sensor. also, annoying. ideas? and the engine seems to be burning rich as there are some very strong fumes coming out of the exhaust. and the temperature needle only budges about 1/10th of the way through the range. it is not running hot as i have hot heat and the antifreeze level is fine. i guess i need a new thermostat? could the thermostat be the source of the fumes. can you help me? are any of these problems related? great little truck. runs like a top around town but simply has a few problems i hope have relatively simple solutions. any assistance you can offer will be greatly appreciated. thanks, robert

Running fine at low speeds but acting up at higher speeds and getting worse sounds like the engine is starving for fuel. Fuel filter change would be my first effort then if it does no cure it have a fuel pressure check. Fuel pump could be weak or the filter on the fuel pump itself could be partially clogged. If the truck sat for a long time the fuel pump filter may have gotten dry and is not letting much gas through. At higher speeds when requiring more fuel volume, a plugged filter or weak fuel pump can do this. Good luck. Darrell S

Hi, I have an 1989 Isuzu longbox with an automatic transmission. The truck has been running perfectly. Driving down the highway it lost sputter as if running out of gas (I was very low). I coasted into a...

The gas in the tank actually provides cooling to your fuel pump.My best guess is that you ran low on fuel and the pump (which could have been marginal) has had it due to overheating. You will have to get the fuel system pressure checked to be sure or remove the main fuel line and see if fuel comes out.Have a bucket ready just in case.Good luck

Horrable screaching coming from trans

This may sound stupid, but I've had what sounds like the same problem until yesterday! Take the vacum line off the EGR valve and see if it stops!?! I thought it was the transmission too, so did the mechanic and the transmission shop, but he told me to drive it till it got worse, yesterday it sounded like the AC comp. It was the EGR valve, took it off and pluged the hose, haven't heard either noise. It's worth a try!

I have a 1989 Isuzu pickup 2.3 5 speed . and the car runs fine however when it get to a certen speed in each gear a horrable screaching comes from what i am guessing the trans.can any one help.

replace the clutch assembly, your problem is most likely the throw out bearing. I say replace the clutch because you are in the heart, so to avoid doing it later do it now.
