At around 60,000 miles it should be changed. The belt is rubber. Remove the camshaft pulley covers. You will see what is known as a serpentine belt as it winds around the pulleys like a snake.

It is a fairly complex job as you need to keep the timing marks exactly where they are, which means jamming th e flywheel or the crank to stop it moving.

When shou;d the timing belt be replaced

The manufacturer recommends replacement of the timing belt at 105,000 miles.

Due to the high mileage interval and the large amount of labor involved, I highly recommend that when you replace the timing belt, also replace the timing belt component kit and the water pump.

The timing belt component kit consists of the timing belt idler and tensioner pullies. The water pump is also driven by the timing belt. The failure of any one of these components will cause you to have to perform (and/or pay for) the same labor all over again because they will cause the new timing belt to come off.

If you call a shop for an estimate of the cost for replacing your timing belt, make sure they include these items in the estimate. I have seen many shops that will quote you the price of replacing only the belt. This way they will look a lot cheaper than the honest shops that quote the entire job the first time. (Then when you are in the shop and they have your engine torn apart, they hit you with the rest of the story.)

ALSO NOTE: The parts stores and the automotive information system that I use professionally, do not list the 2.5L engine as an interference engine, But I can tell you from experience that they have been known to bend valves if the timing belt breaks or comes off while the engine is running. (that is what an interference engine does) Another HUGE reason to protect your investment by replacing all of the components listed above.

What mi interval is a timing belt required?

Are you sure you have a belt, not a metal chain? To my knowledge all the Chrysler V6 engines use a timing chain, which should last the life of the motor. Ask your local auto parts store, they can tell you for sure.
(Don't confuse the timing belt/chain with the serpentine drive belt which runs the air conditioner, water pump, power steering pump, etc. The serpentine belt is always rubber and is visible at the front of the engine (your left as you face the car with the hood open). This should be inspected once a year beginning at 5 years or 60,000 miles, and replaced once it starts showing cracks or wear. If you have never replaced yours, you are due for it now. I just replaced mine on my 2005 T&C with 63,000 miles.)

If you do have a rubber timing belt, I would replace it every 6 years or 60,000 miles (whichever is first) unless the owner's manual calls for a different interval.
Many engines today have "negative valve clearance", which means if the timing belt breaks, the piston will run into the valve, possibly bending the valves. This means a full overhaul of the motor, which is *much* more expensive than replacing the belt.

A metal timing chain is internal to the engine and lubricated by engine oil, and will not break like a rubber belt can. It will last the life of the motor (150,000 miles or more).

How do i replace the timing belt on my '94 Plymouth acclaim?

I did it twice and if you are fairly skilled it will take 4-6 hours, if you have the V6.
Here is the steps:
1. Move car to a place that can support a jack and engine stand.
2. Disconnect battery
3. Loosen wheel lugs on passenger side front tire
4. Jack car on passenger side to lift wheel of the ground
5. Put a block under the oil pan to support the engine
6. Block car frame on left side
7. Remove left front tire
8. Remove v-belt
9. Remove idler pulley
10. Remove and support air conditioner compressor
11. Remove PS pump if you have one
12. Remove motor mount on left side and vacuum / gas connections connected to mount ( mark bolts as to locations )
13. Remove metal plate on engine ( mark bolts as before )
Tricky bolts are on the PS pump (Remove them through PS pulley holes)
14. Remove 3 plastic covers over timing belt ( mark bolts as before )
15. Note timing marks on overhead cams and crank. If none, make some.
16. Ease pressure off timing belt tensioner
17. Remove belt and replace with new. Trick here is to make sure you get the belt notches lined up. Head cams will shift when you remove the old belt. Do not tighten the belt tensioner fully or it will not perform as designed, it should be snug but be able to move.
END... replace part is backward order and drive away !!!

Timing Belt vs timing chain

chains are metal links and usually last the life of the car.
belts are fiber reinforced rubber cogged belts and need replacement about every 60 thousand miles or so.  Because a broken belt can result in catastrophic damage to the engine. Belts are cheaper, usually quieter and require less moving mass for the engine.
My personal preferences are chains.
