What is the problem? I have a code flashing PO717 from a diagnostic scan on my 1996 Olds Aurora.

The PO717 code is for the transmission input speed sensor, or the wires. The sensor is located inside the transmission.

Hello! Yes a defective Camshaft Positioning Sensor (CPS) can cause what would appear to be erratic shifting due to incorrect timing...clarify what you changed? Is TCS, both of them a typo?
The Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS) may also be involved...Give me the exact P code...

sounds like the pump in the Trans is getting weak, not putting out the presure it should. Off to the Transmission shop.

My 1996 town and country wont shift..It was shifting but then would stop but if we pulled over and re started it it would shift fine again. But now it isnt shifting at all..We have a computer hooked for it...

we can here,
your van is going into "limp mode"
when the computer does not get a correct signal from transmission it will not shift because it doesn't know your speed or engine RPM,
Three sensors on the transmission will trip it into limp mode,
1= output sensor,
2=input sensor,
3=speed sensor,
if you have it checked and get a "P0000" type code
it will tell you which one

1993 olds achieva-gears won't shift-what sensors on transmission

Had this problem when I rebuilt my engine. Turns out, that I had plugged back in a sensor that was previously unplugged. There is a known manufacturer's defect on some Achievas where a sensor on the transmission was mounted upside-down. Symptoms caused by this are primarily the car staying in gear (and thus stalling) when stopped, and failing to downshift while slowing down. Just unplug this pesky sensor, located roughly underneath and to the battery side of the throttle body. Be careful, though, because I don't know if running long term in this configuration will lead to transmission damage (although my transmission doesn't show any signs of troubles now that the thing is disconnected.)

Although you didn't mention it, the speedometer probably bounces also. Replacing the speed sensor on the side of the transmission should solve both your problems. Good luck

its the shift solenoid theres 2 of them ones about 100 bucks the other was 45 mine had the same problems i paid a guy 100 bucks to drop the pan and change the switch shifts like new happened at about 128000 miles

Dave,

May want to see if the parts store gave you a good sensor or not. Also May want to check and see if you have a transmission input and output sensor as well. these will also give you the same symptoms. Whatever it is, the transmission is not sending the speed signal to your ECU which is in turn not sending the right shift points until its too late causing the hard shifting and also since the ECU doesnt have a speed signal you may not get an odometer/speedometer reading (one or both may go out). I've had a crankshaft position sensor replaced because my car would die on me but would restart without a problem. As far as it not shifting properly, that is more than likely due to the turbine speed sensor. My Olds does the same thing sporadically. I just clear all error codes and I unplug and then plug in the 20 pin connector going to the transmission. Most of the time the sensor is OK it's the wiring that's the problem. Replacing the sensor will set you back between $700-$1,000 because the transmission needs to be removed from the car to get to the damn sensor.

I think it is on the side of the transmission in the valve body, it is near to impossible to get to unless you have the engine support tool.

I had a 1995 with pressure control solenoid go out and GM wanted like 2500 to replace it, they said they would have to drop the engine. I talked with transmission shop and they would have done it for 500 without dropping the tranny, they have a spreader beam that allows you to hold the engine up after you remove the transmission mounts and it allow you to slide the engine over enough to get the side pan off. I would consider changing the actual transmission filter if you get the cover off.
