Only if it has a leak somewhere. Not that many places to check. Sometimes the master will leak, and you will have brake fluid below the clutch pedal.
A single steel line runs from master to the slave cylinder, down on the transmission bell housing. Check the line and the slave cylinder for leaks. If the slave is leaking, probably need a new one. And same for the master cylinder.
Fill the reservoir and check clutch operation. If any air got in the line to the slave, you will have to bleed the slave at the bleeder valve there. They are bled just like brakes, using the clutch pedal.
the clutch in 97 sonoma is hydraulic and should not require adjustment. If the clutch is not engaging until it is completely off the floor or close to that point (friction point) then it is indicating excessive clutch disc wear and would require replacement normally. You should not have to add fluid to the clutch circuit unless there were a leak in a line, master cyl (clutch), or slave cylinder, in any case the leak would have to corrected first. the reservoir should be located near the brake reservoir normally a little to the left or the brake master cylinder and reservoir. it would look similar but be much smaller. is the engine rpm rising higher then normal during acceleration indicating possible clutch slippage. i hope this will help you, need any more help just let me know
slave cylinder, first check to see if it has fluid, than bleed like you the brakes, there is a resvoier for just the clutch it is usually held on w/ 2 bolts the slave cylinder
Safety first Block the vehicle on Jack Stands or Drive it up ramps.
Remove the Brake Line and plug it so it will not leak brake fluid all over the ground and you.
Remove the Old Slave Cylinder and replace it with the New one or rebuild it then put it back in.
Clear tubing and a bottle required for this last step. Bleed the Slave of all air by having your helper pump the clutch pedal and turning the bleed valve till you have a air bubble free stream of fluid.
Once you have the car off the ground and under, it about 20 minutes job or less.
