How can I diagnose a clunking noise in the front end of my car? It's a 13-year-old Lexus GS400. Sometimes there's a light clunk associated with braking. Other times there's a similar clunk when rolling at low speed but not braking. It could be two different noises from two different sources, but they are similar. The car feels and sounds solid going over bumps and small potholes, and the steering feels secure. The control arms were replaced with new bushings about a year ago. I'm hoping you can help!

driving home, i noticed some metal clunking sounds coming from the front driversside. at ... hmmmm....if it's grinding, then probably a bearing.

does it come when you steer, sometimes its the strut bearing that cause this, my car does this when its cold goes away when warm

If its a front wheel drive more then likely its the half shaft That's a drive shaft on the rt front

Check the ball joints,drive shaft first for uneven and excessive wears.

noises or clunks in rear ends are indications of worn suspension rubbers and other rubber mounted items , drive line joint failures
the front end noise could be brake pad and rotor problems so have them checked by an accredited brake shop

get your vehicle up on a rack and check both the front and the rear u joint. Sometimes a front end clunk is caused by a bad rear U joint. Joe

without having vehicle up on a four poster and putting my head underneath ?? as for the rattle ?? this could be pinking caused by low octane fuel ,95 unleaded is what it should have

It can only be one of a few things. First if it is the switch it won't make any sound at all when you press the button. If you can hear a sound, then the motor is running. If it has a 'clunk-clunk-clunk' sound to it then the gear plugs in the window motor need replacing which always happens around 10 years old. If you hear the motor running without the 'clunk-clunk-clunk' then the regulator cable has jumped track and the regulator will need replacing.

check for worn bushes on that side . jack up the front on that sideand allso check for worn wheel bearing

its probably your sway bar end links, I had the same problem, I replaced both sides and the bushings and no more clunk noise
