remove the belt from the pulleys then put the belt over the top of a fan blade , turn the fan and put the belt over the next blade and so until the belt is in front of the fan then pull it out between blades
fitting belt is the reverse procedure
Fan belts (i assume you are using a v belt and not a serpentine --Flat belt) come in several widths. The correct belt should be level with thw outside dia of all the pulleys or just a bit higher. IF it sits down in the groove it is the wrong belt.. If you have a flat belt ensure you have it fitted correctly around all the pulleys and tensioner otherwise the tensioner won't work as designed to
loosen the bolts for the alternator,then swing it inwards towards the engine,fit belt and swing out to tighten as you do up the bolts.1/2"play in the longest run of belt between pulleys.check alignment of pulleys,belts do not come off on there own.
Audi A6 (1999 fabrication year): 1. Release the fan belt tensioner. 2. Remove the broken belt. 3. Put the new belt correctly in place. 4. Set-up the fan belt tensioner.

Remove the fan shroud cover and draw the fan belts route, loosen the aircon tensioner bolts x 3 on the left side of the cover and remove the aircon belt.With a 15 mm socket on a power wrench pull the auto tensioner to the rightand remove the belt , with a little skill and patience you can get the old belt off and the new one on over the fan blades without removing the fan.Make sure the belt is on properly to prevent it coming off when starting.
