The easiest way to change a serpentine belt is to go and buy a serpentine belt tool (Around $15-$20 at the auto parts store.) It's a long, flat wrench with bits that will fit most belt tensioners. The idea is to move the belt tensioner down, to allow the belt to relax so you can pull it off.
Once you have the belt off, follow the serpentine belt installation diagram on a sticker, located under the hood. Then, while pushing down on the belt tensioner, slip the belt on to the last pully and then slowly bring the tensioner back to tension. Double-check your belt routing with the belt diagram before starting your Grand Cherokee.

I hope this helps! :)

SOURCE: how to change a 1996 chevrolet 1500 pu fan belt

this is done by locating the spring loaded tensioner and taking a 3/8" ratchet and pushing. it is only spring loaded. make sure you follow the routing diagram or if one is not handy under the hood, draw it out as to not forget. it ONLY goes on one way. make sure also that the writing on the belt, you can read it normally without having to stand on the engine. if you dont these belts have the potential to squeek like a bad pulley or belt.

How to install serpantine belt tensioner on 2000 pontiac grand am

Hello,
Basically, Remove the belt. Then remove the bolt that the tensioner pivots on and remove it. It's fairly easy. You may need to remove the belt pulley to make it easier.
The problem comes as your trying to get to it. If you can't see it well or something is in the way. Like the plastic overflow tank or something like that. Then you will need to remove what is keeping you from getting to the tensioner. I did one on a four cylinder last week. The belt pulley on that one had a left hand thread. The tensioner itself should be right hand thread.
Good luck.
