98 chevy 1/2 ton. I was driving home and all of a sudden I had a real stiff brake pedal but very little braking power. I had to use both feet to get stopped at a stop sign.

Vacuum booster went bad. the round canister behind the master cylinder. not a real tough job, but if you do not have much brake experience i would advise you to have it done

Does the pedal go to the floor?? If so it is the master and the slave, they are replace as one unit of repair. If the pedal is very stiff but doesn't go to the floor you have a failed clutch.
check around the wheels for signs of brake fluid. the most likely cause is the master cylinder.is there anyway air is in system? from repairs made recently? this will cause problem so can try bleeding and if does not cure replace master cylinder
What do you mean no brakes? pedal was stiff would not press down?, pedal went to floor? That needs to be checked. if there are no fluid leaks, I would suspect the master cylinder.
1988 chevy r 3500 1 ton changed out driver front brake caliper
brakes are soft peddle goes to the floor tried to bleed but no brake fluid will come please help
YOUR TRUCK HAS KELSEY HAYES FOUR WHEEL DRIVE ANTI LOCK BRAKES EBC 310. YOU CAN BLEED BRAKES MANUAL STARTING AT - RR- LR RF- LF. THIS IS BLEEDING SEQUENCE.BUT YOU NEED A TECH 1 OR 2 SCANNER BECAUSE IF YOU REPLACED THE BPVM OR BRAKE PRESSURE MODULATOR VALVE.BECAUSE AIR TRAPPED IN VALVE ASSEMBLY.THE TECH 1 OR 2 SCANNER YOU HAVE PUT IN THE FUNCTIONAL TEST BLEED AIR OUT OF VALVE ASSEMBLY.THEN YOU CAN BLEED BRAKES MANUAL.
The clutch in your vehicle is connected to your pedal via a cable system or a hydrolic system. BOTH were available. IF yours is hydrolic, which is doubtful due to behgavior, your cannot adjust it. The cable type is better suited for adjustment. This is done at the end that attaches to the clutchplate at the bracket located on the transmission housing. It will turn to adjust. right tight left lose, it appears that you will need to tighted it a pinch to keep it from "jumping." DO NOT tighten so that the clutchplate disengages, this only a very slight adjustment. good luck
from what i remember the overdrive is electronically activated. it is disengaged by low rpm or a switch on the brake pedal. check the pedal switch and look to see if there is a disconnected wire near transmission.hope this helps. please rate me
You need to check the fluid in the master cylinder first. if it is empty you have a leak somewhere. if full then probably a bad master cylinder.brakes just being worn will not cause you to lose all pedal. while if they are worn should be replaced if they say you just need a brake job then be suspicous
Sounds like the release bearing is in backwards! No check valve. If the peddle was pushed, it would pop the slave cylinder piston. 2/ The clutch disc could be in backwards too! Either way, you will need to pull the tranny! Sorry! Frankster016
