I got a code po421 on my 99 mits mirage. Brought it to the shop they said it was either the front o2 sensor or the cat converter. I was told if I replace the cat I also got to replace the o2 sensors. If i replace the front o2 sensor and that doesnt drop the check engine light. And then buy the cat converter. Will I have to buy another o2 sensor?

It is not true that you have to replace the O2 sensors when you replace the catalytic converter. It is suggested, but not required. Most exhaust shops can test the catalytic converter for flow. before you spend the money to replace a part that does not need it.

SOURCE: O2 Sensor defect

MR988905 costs $300+

SNG O2 sensor is just below $100

they may claim being made with the same quality and both are tagged "direct fit" for easy installation.

its just my idea, good luck.

SOURCE: I have an '01 Galant

Im pretty sure the bank 2 is talking about by the catalitic converter and since is sensor 1 it should be before the CAT otherwise it should be on the exahust manifold prolly in the back of the engine.

SOURCE: oxygen sensor 2000 galant

The first sensor closest to the exhaust manifold is for the air to fuel ratio. The second one if it has one will be further downstream and checks to see if exhaust is plugged.

Is your car running right especially at idle????

SOURCE: Spinning My Wheels!! ---- P0421 Code Mitsubishi Galant

I have the same vehicle, same code P0421, changed the BOTH O2 sensors and the check engine light was still on, took it to my fathers garage and checked the Catalytic Converter, and it was ok later I found out that P0421 means that the vehicle doesn't have the proper mixture of gas and air (running richer) so I changed the MAX air flow sensor and wala the code went away.

SOURCE: engine boggs down when trying to go to pass geas

Still sounds like a transmission problem. Especially if it is revving up that high on RPM's and going no where. Sounds like slipping or something in transmission. Could be torque converter.

My 2000 2.0 JETTA is failing inspection and the code pulling up is P0422 but I was told the Cat is in good shape, any suggestions?

code p 0422 refers to main cat converter, bank 1 ---efficiency below thresh hold ===causes cat converter,--- wiring -- heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) 2
heated oxygen sensors are the ones in the exhaust manifolds before the cat converters
they are wired and the wires are delicate and can be easily damaged
O2 sensors (O2s) are found after the cat converters and can determine the quality of the cat performance
At this point I would be looking at the HO2S replacement as that is what the code indicates --IF-- the cat is in proper working condition

I had diagnostics run on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee today and was told it's my O2 sensor, already figured that! It's Bank 1 Sensor 2- is that cylinder 4 5 and 6, post catalytic converter?

bank 1 is the right hand bank looking at the rngine from the front on a convention car or the bank closest to the fire wall on an east west set up
o2 sensors are always after the cat converter
HO2S or heated oxygen sensor which are different to O2 sensors are always in the exhaust manifold or pipe before the cat converter

Location of 02 oxygen sensor on 00 Linc ls v8 need replacing

O2 sensors are after the cat converter and if you have 2 cat converters they will be after each converter
have you had the fault codes read to get that code or are you guessing that that is the problem
mostly with O2 sensors a wash and scrub in vinegar will get them working again but the HO2S sensors ( heated sensors ) in front of the cat converters give the most problems from the current in the wires or other circuitry faults
run the fault codes and save money

I'm getting a code on my 2002 firebird 3.8 PO153 slow response o2 sensor Bank 2 sensor 1. Where is that located at?

it is the sensor after the cat converter for the bank at the front of the engine if it is a conventional engine configuration and not front wheel drive then bank 2 is the lhs of the engine looking at the fan from the front. the sensor will be after the cat converter
the sensor before the cat ( exhaust manifold) is a HO2S which is a heated sensor and a totally different sensor and operation

How many o2 sensore are on the 99 bravado? I replaced the o2 sensor before the cat converter, now code says bank one( before cat.) needs replacing. are there 4?

the sensor before the cat is NOT an O2 sensor but a HO2S sensor ( two different sensors with different operations). If this is a V6 engine there are 4 sensors -- 2 --HO2S sensors before the cats --one for each bank cat and 2 O2 sensors after the cats.
The fault code would have spelt out the correct sensor for replacing

Where is the 02 sensor on a2002 lincoln continnetal

There are four sensors on the Continental cat converter. Because it is front wheel drive, the engine is rotated 90 degrees compared to a rear wheel drive. Next up is location. Front O2 sensor should be near the radiator. It will have a green connector where it is plugged into wire harness. It is called left sensor on the frt wheel drive cars. The right hand O2 sensor is downstream on the inlet pipe right above number 2 cat, the one that looks like a catchers mit, ahead of the flex pipe.Sensor 1 reads air/fuel mixture and is commonly called O2 sensor 1. remember green connector. Sensor 2 monitors the function of your catalytic converter and have a blue connector plug. Front wheel drive cars are a bit tougher because everything is 90 degrees off of diagnosis, front, rear, number 1,number 2. BTW, the sensors with blue connectors are called CMS sensors for catalytic monitor system and rarely go bad. Auto Zone scans for free and I would have it scanned before popping 40 bucks for new.

Hello! My long time (recently not so helpful) mechanic told me my engine light was on due to an O2 sensor code. This lasted at least a year and now the car is giving a code for the Cat Converter. Do you...

replace the o2 sensor,, clear the codes ,, and see if that cat code comes back, they work in unison,, so you may just need the O2 sensor, and all codes will clear

O2 Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 2

That is the O2 sensor right behind the cat. converter. When the cat is clogged it can shoot contaminates in the O2 sensor so sometime just cleaning the sensor will make it work again, if not it will need to be replaced. Mark - ABKS
