2004 Hyundai Elantra Logo

I have a 2004 Hyundai elantra. When driving all my gauges turn off including my odometer and speedometer. My car loses power and the automatic trans. has trouble shifting. My battery completely dies, however if I let the car sit about 45 minutes the battery seems to charge up and the car starts. My alternator light never comes on. I have slow charged the battery overnight but same problem occurs while driving. Can this be the alternator or the battery heating up and losing it's charge?

I am having the same problem with my 2004 Elantra. I have had the alternator tested twice and did replace the battery. This morning I had it running ad put a volt meter on it ( red to the battery pos black to the engine block) I did get a reading of 14 volts for about 30 seconds then the idle lowered and the voltage dropped to 12 volts. I tried this again later but could not get a voltage reading above 12 volts with the motor running. Any suggestions?

i had the same problem with mine i went through like three alternators before i got one that worked properly my recomendation take it to the dealership and get a genuine part installed so that there is a one year parts and labor warranty on they will probably recomend that you change the battery as well. but the problem is the alternator

My dashboard fuel gauge, speedometer, sensor, temp gauges don't work

Check the power to the cluster with your multimeter. You may find a broken wire within the loom.

My odometer has been at the same mileage after a full day of driving.

The nylon gear that drives the speedometer cable has probably failed. This gear is mounted on the transmission.

Is there a fuse for speedometer

The speedometer should be on the same circuit as the rest of the gauges.
If the speedometer and odometer stop working, you should get a check engine light and the problem could be the speed sensor in the transmission.

WHEN IM DRIVING, IT POPS OR JERKS ALL OF A SUDDEN AND THEN WONT SHIFT GEARS. WHEN IM ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND IT DOES THIS, IT WILL BARELY GO 55 MPH.

Your transmission fluid is dangerously low (tranny is dry). The pops & jerks are the transmission
internal components trying not to seize onto each other due to lack of lubrication and/or overheating.
Low transmission fluid leads not only to loss of lubrication but lots of overheating (of the tranny).
The loss of Elantra performance (speed tops out at 55), is caused by power loss due to friction inside the transmission. All your power is lost overheating the transmission (toward destruction), instead of
being transmitted through the transmission to the wheels.

The 2004 Elantra takes Hyundai SP-III Automatic Transmission Fluid, with 8.4 quarts used in a
total refill - but just 5 quarts at a fluid change. For How-to transmission fluid change instructions:

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Hyundai-Repair-815/2004-Elantra-GT-transmission.htm

www.autozone.com claims that 2004 Hyundai Elantra can take these non-Hyundai ATF's:
Lucas Semi-Synthetic Multivehicle ATF
Pennzoil Muilt Vehicle ATF
Valvoline Maxlife Dex/Merc ATF
Castrol High Mileage ATF

Trans drops into 3rd gear won,t shift to 4th

DTC P0734 is "4th gear incorrect ratio" - that's your torque converter 'LOCK UP Clutch" It's worn out (or you're using the wrong Trans Fluid required by Hyundai - SPIII OR Both). The P1624 is simply the Trans Control Unit (computer) communicating to the Engine Control Module (ECM computer) MIL - on request signal to ECM = asking it to turn on "Check Engine" light. MIL = Malfunction Indicator Lamp. When the torque converter 'lock up" clutch slips or doesn't engage, the trans automatically returns to 3rd gear and stays there (it's called 'fail safe' mode) until you cycle the ignition key, then everything resets until the malfunction occurs again.
You'll need to have an AT (Automatic Transaxel) tester hooked up to verify this. Hyundai has a Service Bulletin specifically for "gear incorrect ratio' codes. If when you changed the trans fluid, was it done at a Hyundai Service Center? If not, someone may have installed the wrong fluid.
