I have a 1997 Buick Riviera that slows down when I accelerate to pick up speed. When it happened I could feel a slight jolt, hear the engine winding up but the car slowing down. What is causing this to happen and will it be expensive to get it fixed?

When a vehicle is coasting and slowing down it will often switch into a lower gear which will cause that "back pulling" sensation, as the lower gear is now slowing the car down, which will also cause the engine speed to increase, which you might believe to be engine hesitation. That's the way they are supposed to work, unless of course you have switched the transmission into neutral, which is not a good idea to do.
Does it down shift appropriately when accelerating? Normally when you stomp on the gas while in a high gear (travelling at 40mph), the transmission will downshift to a lower gear giving the car much more torque. This can cause the car to jolt or jerk forward and accelerate suddenly.
If this is way off base and you\'re experiencing something else, please let me know
Get the codes read. you will get a better idea of where to start testing to repair this one. Most auto parts stores will do this for little or nothing. Please get back to me and we can trouble shoot this together.
In the valve body of the transmission, This can be check by its PWM (pulse width modulation) The wire connection is a seven pin connector at upper front of trans case. What you are describing does not seem to be a TCC problem. The TCC comes on at above 50 MPH. Drive at above 50 MPH step on the brake pedal not to stop the vehicle, just slightly,.enough to turn off the TCC. See if it make a difference then do it going toward 30MPH.
i had the same thing...It's the transmission. It's REALLY noticeable shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I was able to get my transmission fixed for 900 bux. That wasn't even a replacement so i can imagine how much it would cost to get it replaced. The shifting will get worse. By the end of my "experience" it wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd for about 5 minutes until i drove it around for a bit. THen it would "warm up" to the idea of shifting to 2nd gear.
Try putting the transmission in low or 1st gear manually shift it down and try taking off as you accelerate shift it manually to 2 then drive. Did it take off like it should when you put it into low and then shift up or did you feel more power when it was in low if so it sounds like the transmission is not going into low gear but taking off in maybe second gear or even drive. When it takes off in any other gear but low it will start slow and sluggish and as you begain to gain speed it will start feel normal but thats because the speed matches the gear you in at that point. If my assistance was helpful please take the time to rate my assistance thank you.
