Try checking your egr valve pressure sensor i have a 96 eddie bauer explorer and had the same problem and only showed me a code for a oxygen sensor malfuntion and replaced both and it cured it

What is temp. gauge showing ? normal ? Do the cooling fans work (electric ) or fan clutch ? Mass air flow sensor dirty ? Do you have a scan tool that reads engine sensor data ? What engine ? 4.0 L
Try the fuel filter. If that is not a problem then the other thing I would suggest is to check the fuel pump. If the pressure is being lost in the fuel pump then your car will lose it's acceleration.
givit a tune--new distributer cap--new plugs and cables--------also have air intake cleaned plus idle control--use a nonchlorinatd solvent sold a napa etc
There will be an egr control solenoid that allows vacuum to reach the egr solenoid, sometimes it will be called the egr vent solenoid. It is probably bad.
