Depending on mileage and how well maintenenced the vehicle is, the valve seals within the cylinder heads can get worn out. When they wear out you can get smoke from your initial start up. If it is a persistant smoke then most likely it's the piston rings that are worn out.
It may be the starter motor contacts which are worn. I have done this twice (on 2 different estima's myself. The starter will not turn or not properly. New contacts for these Denso starters are available on ebay from nipponnev for about £10 delivered and take about 1 hour to fit. No need to buy another starter. Hope this helps. Regards, Paul
