1999 3.8L Ford windstar misfire

When first start up sounds okay, the longer it runs it gets worse to a point like a misfire, it will also start sputtering and lose power, then all of a sudden it will just take off again and run with power but still missing, then start sputtering again. Have replace plugs twice, wires, all are tight. Ran codes they said that misfire on cyclinder #1, bank 1 and 2 are too lean, and exhaust gas recirculation not enough, I am sure all are related. Any ideas and help appreciated.

SOURCE: 1995 Ford Bronco 172 EGO not switching lean bank1- jerks when run

Have u checked for vacuum leaks or poss leaking EGR valve? use carb spray around the upper intake manifold where it bolts to the lower manifold, spray vacuum lines where they are connected to the engine vacuum ports, the idle speed will change if u hit a leak, as far as the EGR valve goes see if it gets hot at idle, if it does it is leaking, if all checks ok replace the O2 sensor, but i suspect u will find a leak at the upper intake plenum.

SOURCE: Ford Windstar 1996 Trouble Codes P0171, P0141, P0161, and P0174

Bank one is toward the front of the vehicle. Sounds like the heated oxygen sensors have gone bad. The Oxygen Sensors are located in the exhaust pipe and require a special socket to remove and replace.

SOURCE: location of O2 sensor in bank 2, 99 5.4 expedition, running lean

I have a ford 2003 windstar that was running very rough when cold and almost stalling. engine light came on. went to autozone and they read the codes for free and told me it was running lean on Bank 2 also. i came home searched for the O2 front sensors online using the info autozone gave me. there are 2 front sensors on my car that need to be replaced at the same time. look for ones that have a direct plug in and don't need wire splicing. the ones without the wiring harness are cheaper but more of a pain, i think.
they were fairly easy to replace. getting access with the wrench was the worst. reset the light by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. seems fine now and the light hasn't come back on.

SOURCE: 2000 CIVIC System too lean Cylinder 3 and 4 misfire Deteced

  1. P0171: This means that the oxygen sensor has detected a lean air-fuel ratio. This can be caused due to a vaccuum leak or a problem in the HO2S circuit or the HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) itself. (Bank one Sensor one). This is commonly located along the exhaust pipe. It could also be a bad Mass Air Flow sensor or a bad Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. Diagnostic checks will be needed to be carried out to be verified though
  2. Well as for the other codes, it means #3&4 cylinders are misfiring. It is a possibility that the P0171 code mite have caused the others to show up. I can be wrong though. But it is a strong possibility. If the air fuel mixtue is too lean indeed, mis-firing will occur, unless it is an actual electronic and not a mechnical problem. By the way, when these codes appear, how is the engine's performance. Does it remain the same or behaves poorly?

My ford windstar 2003 hesitates during cold weather or wet conditions. But good during idle. Some time shows blinking engine light.

The flashing and rough running is to to a misfire or misfires cause by arcing due to moisture on ignition components. Eventually these misfires can lead to other problems such as damage catalytic converter. Start by identifying which cylinder(s) is/are misfiring. The arching can be reproduced with a spray bottle filled with soapy water. Spray the ignition components (wires, coils, distributor cap...)and look for the vehicle to idle rough. Replace any faulty component.

If it rains my 01 ford windstar will not want to run. It will back fire and miss. When dry for few days it will run better engine light is on but if you clear the codes it will run like nothing is wrong....

Windstars are known for lean codes caused by upper intake plenum gaskets. Also, there is a small tube going into the air intake hose that will pull out if you tried to install an air filter. It goes into the air intake hose between the air filter box and the throttle body on the firewall side of the hose. Check it. As far as the EGR concern you would need to provide the exact code. The lean codes won't cause what you're describing. The symptom you're describing sounds more like a misfire. Windstars are known for ignition coils going bad due to hairline cracks allowing moisture in and causing the misfire. The coil is located behind the intake plenum. Also, windstars are known for fouling #'s 1,2 and 3 plugs with oil. Good luck. Be sure to have your rear axle and front subframe checked for cracks at a ford dealer. There's a safety recall on them and if it's too bad, Ford will purchase the vehicle for 1.5 times the book value if it's unsafe.

We have a 2000 Windstar with about 145K miles that in the last 2000 miles has begun to misfire badly and ping under load. Hi octane gas calms most of the pinging, but does nothing for the misfire. No...

Some Ford engines are not equipped with knock sensors. Yours may be one of them. Located in the wiring loom, close to the ECM, is a "jumper" that when removed retards the timing 4 degrees. This should correct your pinging problem. as for the missfire try changing the plugs and wires .also check the egr valve. thanks

My 2001 Ford Windstar has been jerking and shakeing. The worst is 40 mph and around 60mph. Tested it at O'Reillys and it said misfire Cylinder 2. To it to Mechanic said its coil pack 250.00. Asked a friend...

You still need to replace the plugs and wires regardless of the visual appearance. If it persists then a compression test and fuel injector swap is needed. If it persists then more expensive parts and tests are needed to see if it s internal engine issue or lean running issue or clogged EGR port.

03 windstar misses and sputters when it rains, eng lite flashes then stays off 4 a while.then goes off. when dry out it runs great.is it the coil pack

Could possibly be the coil pack has a crack in it, could also be plug wires have cracks in them as well, sounds like time for a tune up. Recommend replacing plugs and wires, and if that doesn't solve the issue then spring for the coil pack. Scanning the computer will tell you what code you have to help point you in the right direction as well. If you have any p0300-p0306 codes those are all misfire codes.p0300 is random multiple misfire, p0301-p0306 are individual cylinder misfires.

1999 ford windstar has a misfire code

Look at the coil pack, these are known to develop cracks, usually on the underside in the resin, you have to remove it to tell. It is much easier to reomve with the wiper cowl removed.
