The shifter works off a shift cable which is connected to the transmission. The connection of this cable to the transmission is on the drivers side looking straight up were you can see it. The other end connects to the inner part of the shifting mechanisum where you shift
You can only get a replacement at any General Motos dealerships parts department

Here is a link to the parts that is used in the shifter linkage. Check the linkage at the transmission, make sure that the Cable is still connected at the Transmission shift leaver and or that the cable it self is not broken.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck. http://www.compnine.com/index.php?u=1&year=1999&artnbr=MU04-029&artsfx=NULL&supplgroup=60&catcode=18U&modelcode=U&makecode=C&modelseries=UA&uid=1&modelid=1147577282&capuid=1&majorgroup=04&grouptype=B

my 2004 chevy venture just had thsi problem happen today where you move the shifting lever and it feels really really loose and the transmission isn't shifting. I found the problem when i open the hood and seen the cable that goes to the top of the transmission. the cable was totally disconnected from the transmission. it looks like the transmission has a ball where the cable is supposed to connect and the end of the cable has a socket the shape of the ball. not sure of the fix yet but i reached in and put the socket back on the ball and its a temporary fix. i am thinking either there is a clip that makes the ball and socket stay connected or the ball and socket assembly is damaged and needs to be totally replaced

    harvys link is bad.

There is no clip, the ball and sock come apart from wear and tear after a few years. In most case all you have to do is just to reconnect it, but put some grease on the ball to keep it lubricated and you should be good to go. If it keeps falling off, then its time to replace the cable cause the nylon cup is worn out. Glad you got your Venture running again and thank you for using FixYa. Molson02536

This has a cable from steering colum to transmission, From your description of how it occured, Im betting the bolt came loose on one end or the other. Get a flaslight and look under dash towards bottom of steering column, Have someone wiggle the shifer while you watch, If its intact there? Raise hood and the linkage is on top of trans right side, Do the same, Have someone shift it while you watch. This will tell you for sure whats wrong

1999 chevy cavalier transmission won't shift into

1999 cavelier manual trans: My son was shifting his manual trans really rough (ramming through the gears to try to beat someone out at a light) and ended up not being able to put it into anything but 3 and 4 (straight up and down). We noticed that the shifter cable, that actuates the position of the arm on the transmission, had pulled away from a "c" clip and was not held into place about 8-10 inches down the cable away from the trans. The cable needs to be secured into that clip in order to let the wire inside move the trans. lever to shift. Otherwise you will be stuck on what ever "rail" your trans is on at the time of disconnection. It would be the first thing that I would check.

Chevy venture 2004 Transmission

Bring to tranny shop or repair shop, have it scanned for trouble codes, many electrical parts and solonoids in those trannys, possible it may just be a shift solonoid bad or needs adjustment, much cheaper than replacing tranny. good luck!
