Many times this light will come on when the oil needs to be changed. If oil has been changed recently the light may have not been reset at the time of service so the computer doesn't know when the oil was actually changed.

What do i need to do when my jeep says perform service. i dont know what kind of service?

Usually means just an oil change. All other services are determined by the manual as far as transmission, transfer case and differential service intervals.

I dont have an owners manual for my 2004 jeep grand chreokee and I recently had my oil changed and not sure how to reset the perform service reminder.

If you press and hold (at least 3 seconds) the button (overhead) that you use to change what is displayed overhead it should reset the perform service reminder.

Service light

What exactly does the light look like? If it is a picture of the engine (check engine light) you may have a problem with the car. If it is a light that specificaly says "Service Engine Soon" or "Maintance Required", you may not need to do anything. Some cars, not many, have a service reminder light that comes on when ever a service is due like an oil change. When a mechanic does an oil change, they may reset this counter and after 3000 miles or so, the light comes on despite what ever conditions the oil is in, whether it needs to be changed or not, the light will come on and stay on. Now i dont want to tell you to ignore your light and later find out it was trying to tell you something was wrong. Look in your owners manual and find the description of the light. If you cannot find the description or do not have your owners manual, let us know and we will try and help you again. Hope this helps

Also has intructions in the owners manual as to how to reset the service warning light-- kind of tricky but once you get it it's pretty simple.

When starting car the dash lights were flickering

Its telling you, according to a preset schedule, your vehicle is due for service. You might have already preformed needed services such as an oil change, but the computer was never reset. Your owners manual will specifically explain what to do and when to do it.
