Originally it was designed to "warn" of an emission control problem but today's cars use them for lots of different "alarms" some serious some not. The only way to know is to read the codes. Several ways to accomplish. 1) Buy a code reader, around $100 2) take to an oil change place that will read it for free. 3) take it to dealer and spend about $100 to tell you what is wrong then charge you more to fix it. Personally I chose #1 and read my own codes, I can fix it or take it to get fixed, but I know what is wrong. The code reader will work on all post '96 cars.
The (ecm) cars computer has detected a malfunction in one one of the monitored circuits generally in the engine or transmission.You will need to have the vehicle scanned in order to determine what the malfunction maybe and what will be needed to correct the issue.
This is more related to your Emission System.
Sensor which check the exhaust gas send signal to ECU to confirm within the spec. limits of exhaust gas. If there is any abnormality, you will be getting warning on your dashboard.
