I need to replace the front axle assemblies on my 2003 vw passat. I've done this on my '94 4runner and it was pretty simple. It took ~3 hours with very little instruction.
In comparison, the Passat drive line and suspension is a much tighter fit. Are their any particular difficulties that the average DIYer should know about replacing the axle assemblies on the Passat? Any special tools needed?
Thank you,
Bob
You will need a set of Triple square drivers for the transmission end of the axles and you need a torx bit or large socket (depending on what axle bolt you have) for the axle bolt. it isn't hard to do but the axle bolt should be loosened while the tire is on the ground before you jack up the car as it is very tight. Make sure you torque all bolts properly because you could have vibrations problems if you don't. I would order my axles from raxles.com as most after market axles are junk. Raxles rebuilds OEM axle shafts and he products are very good, as I have used them myself. You might also want to check out passatworld.com. much better instructions at that website. Good luck
Common hand tools and snap ring pliers I guess.

I also have a 1999 VX passat GLX. I had the same problem last year and had it repaired. It was around $1,000 in the Chicagoland area.
Good Luck

You might have a torn booth at the joint. I had this problem on my car when I was making turns. Driving straight didn't give me the noice. Only when making turns. When a booth is torn dust gets into the greese and wears out the wheel bearing.

Yes you will need special tools for a rear brake job. you will need a set of xzn wrenches large ones say 12 and up to 18 I believe, and you will need a caliper tool that spins and compresses the caliper at the same time

no no problems at all, just strip the tings out of the way thats holding it in and stop trying to do a short cut
