Do your lights dim considerably when trying to turn over? If so, then your battery may be flat. If your headlights don't dim considerably when energising the starter motor, then it is likely the starter motor which has failed.
hi mate, my 55 plate passat did the same before major problems happened. first turbo went then the oil pressure light came on and the car went into limp mode. before its too late for you and a costly bill can you do the following. check if your car has a recall for the injector problems which vw are replacing under warenty. second thing the guy who repaired my turbo told me that these cares have a major fault which caused the turbo to go. the fault is the oil pump failure you must adress this issue as you can get a lot of info on the discussion forms. my car started with the same problem as you have described the pd engines have a design fault with the oil pump and shaft. this is common causing your turbo to go then the car will start showing oil pressure low please stop engine. educate your self via the forms and act quickly befor you end up with massive bills. i hope this has helped. trust me vw know about this design fault.you need to change your chain driven oil pump to the new gear driven system which vw have modified. all vag cars have the same problems be it audi skoda vw . my car had the same problem as you have said .started off with emissions then turbo failed thats when i started to investigate this problem . the pd engines was designed by some rookie at vw.
I know this isn't a free solution but if you're into DIY repairs an official service manual will easily pay for itself. I had a 2000 Jetta until recently and used my manual dozens of times to validate the $50 expense.
I think the code explains it.
If you want to know what is it and were is it ,post more details of your car ( VIN , production date(p/d usualy found on center post below lock latch or on the driver door below lock mechanism-big information lable) and engine code(found on cyllinder head , frt. of engine , look from top- small polished cast appendix , even with bottom of valve cover , with three letters AVH, AHA , ABK etc...... )
I had the same problem with my wife's 2006 passat turbo. We lost 2.5 quarts in 3000 miles and the warning light came on. They put us on a 1000 mile oil test and I lost 1.8 more quarts of oil. They finally agreed to replace the rings. Service tech told me that the factory rings are defective, they begin to lead after about 25,000.
The problem more than likely is the water pump. Like many VW's the water pump is plastic and it starts to fall apart after 50,000 miles. Coincidentally when you warranty ends.
