FWIW,
I've had a similar problem, but ONLY using the remote to "Unlock" the doors (that's the only button I use on the remote). I found the special coating on the "Unlock" button that makes contact with the circuit board was wearing off. I got another fob from a friend, it worked for about a year and then the same problem. The semi-conductive coating was worn off as well.
I played around and was able to open the doors by touching the circuit board itself with my finger.
If that describes your problem search the web for replacement rubber buttons, it takes less than a minute to swap-out, they range from $700 to $10 plus shipping.
Also your fob shouldn't have needed re-programming, the dealers are making a fortune with this re-program ****.

For the technical types;
The coating is a semi-conductive coating. The resistance of a "good" pad was hard to measure. I put resistors across the circuit board, I started @ 10k, it worked, then 100k, 100k didn't work, 82k worked fine. I just added a small micro-switch and no problems since.

Good Luck

Hi this sounds more like the receiver system is not working, if you had the remote re-programmed that would not be the issue, it wont be a fuse as it would not work at all let alone give you a faint click noise, what you might have to do in this instance is disconnect the battery from the vehicle and leave it for 30 minuets, then reconnect it, this should set off the alarm system but don't worry this is normal, press the remote to lock then to open, put key in ignition and turn to position 2 ( do not turn over ) wait 5 seconds then turn off, then lock vehicle, wait 25 seconds for system to reset then try and see what happens, if you get nothing again, your internal system will have to be checked out...hope this helps

How Do I Know If My Car Equipped With A Keyless Entry Remote System? I have a 1999 Ford Windstar. I bought several remotes but can't get my locks to engage. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Cathy

It does indeed have keyless entry. It needs reprogramming when you get a new remote. Also if you disconnect the battery. Usually a local car alarm fitting shop, or an auto-electrician will do it. Plus of course a Ford dealership.

I went through programing as far as lock recycling but wont go any further

Remote Transmitter Programming NOTE: All keyless entry remote transmitters must be programmed at the same time.
NOTE: Programming (or reprogramming) the keyless entry remote transmitters into the central security module can be accomplished using a diagnostic tool or by carrying out the following steps.
  1. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN eight times within 10 seconds, ending in RUN. If the module has successfully entered program mode, it will lock and then unlock all doors.
  1. Within 20 seconds, press any button on a keyless entry remote transmitter, and the doors will lock and then unlock to confirm that each keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed. Repeat this step for each transmitter.
  1. If the door locks do not respond for any keyless entry remote transmitter, wait several seconds and press the button again. If the door locks still fail to respond, refer to Inspection and Verification.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, or wait up to 20 seconds after Step 2, to exit program mode. If a keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed (or reprogrammed), the doors will lock and unlock one last time to confirm.

I have a 2000 ford mustang. Suddenly my keyless entry remote stopped working. I replaced the battery and turned the off and on 8 times and the locks cycled. after which i pushed the unlock but nothing...

The keyless entry system is controlled by the (GEM) - generic electronic module .
Keyless Entry The electronic door lock system has two main components:
  • generic electronic module (GEM)(14B204)
  • keyless entry remote transmitter (15K601)
  • NOTE: Battery power and ground must be remove before disconnecting the GEM connectors to avoid setting false codes.
Power Locks Operation The power locks feature allows the customer to lock and unlock the doors via momentary switches located on the driver and passenger door. When the GEM detects a momentary press of the driver or passenger lock button, the GEM will supply power to the driver or passenger lock actuators for approximately 250 ms from relays internal to the GEM. When the GEM detects a momentary press of the driver or passenger unlock button, the GEM will supply power to the driver or passenger unlock actuators for approximately 250 ms from relays internal to the GEM.
Remote Keyless Entry Door Locks Operation The remote entry feature allows the customer to unlock the driver door, unlock all doors, and lock all doors using a valid remote transmitter as long as the ignition switch is not in RUN or START. The driver door is unlocked whenever the GEM detects a valid remote transmitter unlock transmission. All the doors are unlocked when the GEM detects a second valid remote transmitter unlock transmission within three seconds of the first transmission. All the doors are locked when the GEM detects a valid remote transmitter lock transmission. If the GEM detects a second valid remote transmitter lock transmission within three seconds of the first transmission, the doors will lock again, the horn will sound for 20 ms and the parking lamps will flash for 200 ms to indicate the doors are locked. If the GEM detects the driver or passenger door is ajar during the second lock transmission, the doors are locked again and the horn is sounded twice. If the GEM detects a valid remote transmitter lock transmission within three seconds of detecting a valid remote transmitter unlock transmission, the GEM will lock all the doors

Lock all the doors from the inside (with all the doors closed), unlock your driver's door by manually lifting the lock, then press it back down after you are out - this will prevent the alarm from sounding when you use the key to unlock the door.
