I have a 97 Toyota Avalon XLS that won't start, had a new battery installed, still makes clicking sound when I try to start. After a few tries it may or may not start.

Thanks for your quick response Steve. Someone said they thought it was the alternator. I am on my own when it wont start so I have been tapping the starter, then going into the car to start it. So its hard to test your theory, but I will try to get someone to help me out.

Hi it does sound like the starter is stuck, there could be a way to free it and find out for sure if it is u/s, what you have to do is, locate starter on your vehicle, depending on its location you can try tapping it with a small hammer or a long bar of sorts, at the same time get someone to turn the ignition at the same time while you are tapping the starter, this should free the solenoid and then thestarter should work, if it does, turn the motor off, and try again and see if it works if it does your ok, if not then try the above again, if you have to do it every time you turn the motor off then you will need to replace your starter....hope this helps please vote thanks

Sound like your starter is going out, the clicking your hear is the starter solenoid but the starter motor don't want to engage, replace it will take care of your problem.

1998 Toyota Avalon XLS -- Will not start. No clicking.

It definitely sounds like a weak battery issue. Ck your connections at the battery for cleanliness & tightness. U need to have the batt checked along w the charging system & ckd for electrical shorts. If no problem is found that is the starting line. It may be a prob in the ignition system etc. if the problem isn't found by here. Good Luck

It sounds like you have a bad actuator. This is attached to the starter and has a solonoid that pushes the starter motor gears into the engine gear. If the solonoid is faulty this may happen. Also check alignment of the same.

Sound like you have a bad alternator, poss bad battery too.If you can jump start it with a volt meter check voltage at battery should have above 13.5 volts, do this after you unhook jumper cables and engine running. If bad voltage reading replace alternator make sure you charge battery before starting engine with new alternator or it could damage alternator. If good voltage have battery check.Hope this helped.
