Often, particularly after having recently been driven, the shifter will not budge from park. After some time, eventually it will work. This problem is starting to happen more often.

You likely have a faulty brake pedal interlock sensor switch.
Check brake switch for servicability/adjustment.
Refer to owners manual for emergency over-ride interlock release procedure if necessary.

There is a shift solenoid that functions when the brake pedal is depressed. When the ignition is turned on and the brake pedal is depressed the shift solenoid pin retracts allowing the shift to be placed into gear. Using a screw driver only depresses the lever to move the shifter to place it into gear. The ignition key will not go back into park because the pin on the solenoid is extended preventing the shifter to be put into park. The solenoid must be replaced to get everything back to normal.
Shift interlock solenoid not working and will not disengage parking lock, remove center console, locate shift solenoid, test it, if bad replace it. In the meantime you can use a zip lock tie to hold it in the disengaged position and your shifter should work.
Make sure the shifter is all the way in PARK. Try to start the car. IF not work, you could try jiggling the shifter while trying to start the car. (note: most shifters won't budge from park until the car is started for safety reasons). good luck. ALso try jiggling the steering wheel too while trying to start the car. If none of this works, then it might be that the ignition starter is bad and needs replacing. I can't guarantee any of this will work since I don't have all the details. If all else fails, take it in for repair!

the fuse is bad for shift lock solenoid. Read owner manual section on brak-shift interlock. Check fuse for nbrake lights. Brake lights work.
Owner manual has emergency by pass procedure. I think you turn key to OFF and then shift to neutral and start car then. Next time in park, you have to repeat.
these have a safety system so the shifter won`t go into any gear unless the brake is pushed(indicating someone sitting in the drivers seat),if the brake lights aren`t working this indicates that the fuse that operates the shift lock solenoid and brake lights is not working and needs replacing.check the fuses and replace the fuse and things will probably return to normal.
corrosion is most likely the cause at this age a the copper(or less than) turns the wire into a less conductive state, in cane shape thus eventually breaking the circut
ok first step is to take off the rubber cover (change holder) on the shifter. there is a pink tab push the pink tab down with a long screw driver. If it still is stuck in park the interlock spring is broken in the shifter u would need a shifter assembly 99% of the time this is the problem good luck.
Have the brake lights checked to verify they work, if they are not working the system will stay locked in park, most likely the problem is a degfective brake light switch.
