I have a 1999 ford taurus v6 3.0 and the engine was recently replaced because the head gasket wen due to overheating. I replaced the rediator and the temp sensor switch and still the car is overheating. what could be the reason ? I dont see the temp gauge or the speedometer working after the engine was changed. The transmission of the car also does not shift correctly after the engine change. What could be the problem with all these problems.

my first question is if the temp gauge isnt working then how do you know for sure that its oberheating. second you replaced the engine, where did the engine come from, what kind of shape was it in when you got it.

The car is overhaeting because after driving water coolant is coming down the reseviour and that means its overheated. The engine replaced came from the junk yard. Iam not too sure what shape it was in because it was replaced by the machanic. The reason the engine was replaced was the head gasket had gone on the original engine due to overheating.

because you see coolant running down the side of the surge tank does not mean for sue that the engine is overheating, could be a faulty cap, maybe the surge tank is overfilled, maybe the tank has a crack, could be a number of reasons, if the engine temp, speedometer and trans are not working properly after the mechanic installed a different engine, then maybe he didnt connect something up correctly or the engine has a previos problem that you inherited-no offenese. if you dont know what the temp is of the engine then you dont know for sure that it overheating, unless you have a obvious sign like a pile of holt molten metal where the engine ownce was.

1999 Ford Taurus keeps running hot

Does it get hot mainly when parked or stopped at a red light or does it get hot even when the car is in motion? If its only when your stopped, the cooling fans are probably not working due to a blown fuse, relay or bad fan motor. If the coolant inside the reservoir seems to boil once the engine gets hot, that can be caused by a defective radiator cap.A blown head gasket will also cause overheating. If you let the engine idle for a few minutes, shut it off, pull all of the spark plugs, see if any plug or two adjacent plugs are wet with coolant, that's a sign of a blown head gasket. If you constantly need to refill the radiator with coolant, that's another sign.

My 2001 Ford Taurus keeps running too hot to safely drive. Whenever the car is started fluid immediately gushes out of the plastic resevior that you put the water/antifreeze leading to the radiator. I...

You have an air bubble at the top of the engine.
The antifreeze spewing out of the overflow happens due to your perfectly functional radiator cap
passing the overheated coolant/air mixture out of the system into the reservior (in an attempt
to relieve overpressurization of the cooling system)
The sudden nature of your overheating comes from the boiling of the inadequate amount of
coolant/antifreeze in your engine, since it cant properly cool the engine, so it boils (overheats quickly), and pressure rises immediately within the cooling system.
The Fix is free: locate and open the (air) bleeder port at the top of the engine, and add the usual
50% coolant/50% water mixture to the radiator until the radiator is full to the level indicated in
your owner's manual (or the "Full" line). Then close the bleeder port and replace the rad (radiator)
cap.
The air bleeder port is normally located near the thermostat, and should be opened each time
that coolant is added to the radiator. The air bleeder port need not be opened when adding
50/50 coolant to the reservior, since the rad cap is going to be closed while adding coolant
to this part of the cooling system.
Warning: driving beyond the point where your engine temperature gauge indicates overheating will
destroy the car's engine - it'll seize up due to overheating, and the only fix for a seized/burned-up
engine is replacement (of the engine). Seizing an engine is really easy with an air bubble in the
top of the engine - you could easily burn up/warp the head, necessitating replacement of the head
and head gask
et.

Antifreeze leaking into cylinders on 2000 ford taurus

more than likely,,,a blown head gasket,,this gasket seals the water ports in addition to cylinders,,expensieve repair,,less,,if you do it yourself,,has your car overheated,,,that can blow a gasket quickly,,,sometimes it will also leak on the outside of the engine,,look for leaks,,either way,,probably needs new head gasket,,good luck.

Hello alexander923

There are no gasses in the cooling system, if it is completely full. Unfortunately, it does seem like a blown head gasket that is pushing combustion gasses into the cooling system on your Taurus. My experiences with these little P.O.S. 3.0L OHV Ford motors is, it is usually a cracked head, on the firewall side of the engine. The heads only cost about $50 for a rebuilt, so not too expensive.

Anyways, you came here looking for why your Taurus is overheating, didn't you? I just happen to have written an article about a year ago that has already helped several million people. Here is a link to that article:
How to diagnose an overheating engine.
After reading it, you will see that a simple process you can perform in your driveway without any tools, could have saved you that $100 diagnostic fee at the shop you took it to.

I help people save money on car repairs for a living. So, if you want to see more great tips and trick like this, then feel free to follow me on Twitter.

If it overheated badly , there may be a head gasket gone, this can also make a popping sound.
check if there is water in the oil( milky white) and if there is oil in the water, A compression test of the engine and a pressure test of the radiator may show a problem

I have a 1999 ford taurus with the 3.0 sohc we have replaced the thermostat and the pressure cap and it still keeps blowing out coolant what else could be wrong?

I assume its overheating.
Ensure motor doesn't have tuning or mechanical problems (such as blown head gasket).
Check radiator core is not blocked,
Check operation of cooling fans.
Check the coolant system is correctly filled - any airlocks cleared (by bleeding as may be required).
Check radiator hose on suction side of waterpump not (soft) collapsing when engine speed above idle,

Slow to rapid coolant rise after engine is shut off

I had a similar problem with my 99 taurus. I had an expansion tube on the top of the plenum stopped up, the steel one. I took my garden hose and started testing to make sure water flowed through all of my system after i had put new heads and gaskets on mine. That tube probably was the original reason for my blowed head gasket, it got hot...I just took it off and ran a wire through it and blew it out with air hose then replaced it, maybe this is your problem.

Slow to rapid coolant rise after engine is shut off

Normal. This is called heat soak. When you stop the engine, its temperature rises since the coolant is no longer being circulated by the water pump through the radiator. The coolant then expands and goes higher in the overflow tank. As the engine cools, it retreats back into the engine. Proper level should be determined only when the engine is cool.
