Your engine's computer is seeing data from the engine that it considers out of the normal on your vehicle. Any automotive repair shop will be able to scan the computer for the trouble code for you. Autozone will scan the code for free, however, you will still need to bring the trouble code print-out to a well qualified technician to be able to tell you what the potential problem may be. These codes can indicate anything from a loose gas cap to random misfire in the engine.

SOURCE: check engine light

Most check engine light faults are related to a vacuum leak in the system. It could be as simple as a loose gas cap. In my case, and the majority of other S70's, there is a small vacuum hose elbow, located out of sight from the engine manifold and behind the engine thermostat housing, that has deteriorated and is most likely setting the code in your vehicle for a fault. It is not easy to get to and will take some effort to replace. You can go to Autozone and they can read the code for you to see if you're going in the right direction. If it is a gross vacuum leak as determened by the code, then look a the rubber elbows/hoses in the charcoal vapor canistor vacuum circuit. Check out some of the forums such as Mathews or Bay13 for technical inof on the actual repairs.

SOURCE: volvo 99 s70 awd check engine light stays on, also service light

have the codes ran on a scanner
Advance Auto Parts
Pep Boys
Auto Zone
They will all do it for free
however federal regulations prevent them from clearing the codes, they can still tell you what is wrong with the vehicle, and even print out a list for you to go by

1998 VOLVO S70 INTERMITTENT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, GOES OFF COMES ON NO EMISSION CODES

intermittent engine codes are not serious and it just indicates that one or more of the sensors is reporting a bad signal..at what ever time intervals.....this just means that as you drive , bad connections develops as a result of the movement for a second or long enough for the computer to detect a fault and then it goes back to normal....you can check for bad connections yourself by wiggling the wires with engine running and see if the light comes on ..which will tell you where the bad connection is and then fix it yourself or just wait until the connection gets really bad and the engine light stays on permanently .the computer will then store the code thats causing the fault and you'll know exactly where it's coming from.

Check Engine light

The easy fix? OK--here it is---remove positive battery cable--step on brake for 10 seconds, reconnect cable.

If it resets, get a code reader to see what the malfunction is. Remember---Volvo's remind you of oil change intervals by displaying that wonderful light!

BTW--at 123000 miles I would suspect the oxygen sensor is in dire need of replacement. Replace with Bosch only!
