I am working on a 93 prelude trying to pull front roters to replace broken lug nuts. but when try to losen 1 1/2 nut cannot get lose and donnot see any locking mechnizm to stop it from spinning off . please help

This is a somewhat common problem, believe it or not. Due to lack of preventive maintenance, the wheels will sometimes work themselves loose. If caught early, the loose nuts may merely need tightening to proper torque specs to solve the problem. After a certain point, damage is done to the wheels and lugs and nuts, due to the "flapping" of the loose wheel. Past this point, parts must be checked and replaced.

Whatever you do, have the wheels and lugs checked by a competent mechanic ASAP! This is a serious safety hazard that could turn deadly on the road. Is a new wheel worth more than your life? No it isn't, you can afford it!

You do not remove the wheel hub flange, just follow the procedure that I replied to earlier, and this is the procedure if you do not want to obtain a special tool for pressing the lug studs;

First you will have to pound the broken lug studs out of the wheel hub, then you will need a lug nut and about a half an inch thick of flat washers.

1. Insert the new lug stud through the wheel hub from behind so that the threaded end is facing out towards you and then put some grease on the threads.

2. Then slip the flat washers onto the lug stud followed by the lug nut, and run the lug nut down to take up the slack.

3. Then using a breaker bar tighten the lug nut until it pulls the lug stud through the wheel hub and it is flush with the wheel hub.

Be sure that the amount of flat washers used will make up for any non-threaded part of the lug stud that might stick out past the wheel hub preventing the lug nut from pulling the lug stud all the way through the wheel hub, and basically you do not want the lug nut to run out of threads before it can pull the lug stud flush with the wheel hub.

How to Replace Wheel Lug Nuts
(DIY Complexity: Easy / Time: 1.5 hours)

Steps:
Step 1 Secure the vehicle on a solid level surface to ensure that it does not roll or lean when raised.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.

Step 2 Break the lug nuts loose but do not remove. Using a floor jack, raise up the front of the vehicle.
o Tip: Using an aftermarket floor jack, instead of the original equipment (OE) jack, can make the job easier and safer. Verify the condition of the floor jack before use.

Step 3 Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.
o Tip: The pinch welds or the frame rails are the two best locations for vehicle support.

Step 4 Remove the lugs nuts. Inspect the threads on the wheel studs.

Step 5 Install the new lug nuts by hand making sure they thread properly.

Step 6 Tighten each lug nut in a star pattern. Lower the vehicle to the ground and torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications.
o Tip: Refer to the owner's manual for the exact location on the vehicle.

Step 7 Road test the vehicle to verify lug nut repair.

take off tire. remove old stud by hammering it out with a punch. put a socket behind axle plate so as not to break the plate. when replacing, just start stud from back by hand, then use a lug nut to pull it in tight. when tight replace tire!

hi,
remove the rotor with the lugs in it - take it to NAPA - they will remove the old one and replace it with a new lug bolt/nut combo for the price of the parts.

knock it out... use an old nut that will fit the new stud and install the stud. the nut will pull the stud in tight to the flange.

you can replace the stud by hitting it out with a hammer and punch. by a new stud and nut. put the new stud through the hole to pull it through put the lug nut on backwords and tightening it down until it seats completely.

The bolts can be replaced 1 of 2 ways w/o pulling axle. Need to take rotor off and either press bolts out with an arbor press or can be tapped out with a copper or brass hammer. Once out, the new ones can be pressed in by putting about 4 or 5 washers on and then tightening the lug nut down until the lug is pulled snug into the roter. Once snug, the roter can then be reinstalled on the wheel and brake assy put back. Caution!! Brake assy needs to be supported up out of the way with wire or coat hanger while removing rotor. Undo force of weight on brake pad assy can damage hose or unit itself.

The first step in wheel stud replacement is to remove the old one. On almost every car, this is done by taping them out from the threaded side
.
Rotate the hub so that the back side (flat, on the back side of the hub) will not smash into something when you tap it out.
You will need a heavy hammer and safety glasses,

Next, while the glasses are on your face, use the hammer and whack on the threaded end of the old stud to drive it out the back side of the hub. If if was broken off real short, you might have to use a punch to transfer the hammer blows to what is left of the stud.

To install the new one, place it in the hole from the back side and use a standard lug nut on the new stud screwed on backwards (flat end toward the hub) and then use the car's lug wrench to tighten the nut and pull the stud into the hub. Make sure the grooves in the hub line up with the ridges in the new stud before trying to seat it.

Once the stud is fully seated, remove the lug nut. You are done.

I usually buy a standard lug nut that fits the replacement stud to do this procedure because most mag nuts are closed on the back end. It is cheap and will save lots of time.
