I have a 2008 Cobalt that did the same thing. Mine was fixed under warranty when it happened and I see now that there is a factory recall because of this issue. Go back to your dealer and check it out.
My cobalt turns over but doesnt start up and i dont know whats wrong with it to get it fixed.
Your battery probably died because the car wasn't completely shut off. There is a very stupid fail safe in the car that prevents you from shutting off the car if it doesn't think it's in park. There is a compartment in the steering collum below the wheel with a removable plastic cover. Pull off the cover and throw it away, you'll never need it again and stick your finger up it and search for a little button on the left side. Press it down as you turn the key and it will come right out. You'll either have to get the issue fixed, or just do that forever. The owners manual also describes this better than me.

Are you using the original key that came with the car? The chip in that key may have gone bad. Try using the spare key that should have come with the purchase of the car. You may also be having battery issues. If all else fails....call the people who really know how to rape you...DUM Dum dummmmm....the dealer

If the wheel is turned in either direction, pull the whell in that direction and try getting the key out. If that doesn't do it, try shifting the automatic transmission from Park back to drive, and then to park again to disengage the interlock.

Went thru this with the neighbor. At the 6:00 position under the column is a plastic panel. Remove it with small screwdriver. Using index finger , press on white plastic button. This releases switch and allows you to remove key. Replace plastic panel.

Have you tried shifting the gears completely through and then putting the car in park. It sounds like the car isn't able to be put completely in park to release the key. Try putting the car in N and removing the key. Even thought the car may not completely be in park to release the key, The gear most likely is in park but not enough to make the switch/sensor to release.
