The coolant reserve tank is a medium for the radiator to breathe. Water passes from the radiator to the coolant reserve tank and fort.
The car might not necessarily over-heat if the coolant reserve tank is broken, but it is advisable that you replace it to enable it serve its purpose within the operations of the car engine.

If the tank is part of the pressurized system, indicated by a pressure cap (the cap will nomally have the psi limit printed on the cap, typically about 15 psi) that screws on, your engine will loose coolant and over heat. if the cap snaps on or otherwise is not a preesure cap, the tank just holds coolant that is recovered and delivered to and from the cooling system due to expansion and contraction of the coolant from getting hot and cooling down. you still can lose enough coolant for the system to over heat. just be sure to check the coolant often when the engine is cool
The reservoir tank is the highest point in the cooling system,it is to prevent air from entering the system when cooling down, also making the coolant temperature higher than boiling point with a pressure cap,if its broke, fix it asap.or you will overheat causing expensive fixes later.

It is to catch excess coolant upon expansion due to heat or if the engine should overheat. Upon cooling, the fluid is then pulled back into the radiator to keep it full. Definitely replace if broken as this is a pressurized cooling system. A pressurized system raises the boiling point of the coolant and helps to keep the engine at proper operating temperature. Failure of this system can cause the engine to run hot.
