What is the coolent reserve tank for???? IF broke does it need to be fixed immedatley? Mine is busted and I was wondering if my car is going to overheat now. THANKS

  • Anonymous May 27, 2010

It is to catch excess coolant upon expansion due to heat or if the engine should overheat. Upon cooling, the fluid is then pulled back into the radiator to keep it full. Definitely replace if broken as this is a pressurized cooling system. A pressurized system raises the boiling point of the coolant and helps to keep the engine at proper operating temperature. Failure of this system can cause the engine to run hot.

The coolant reserve tank is a medium for the radiator to breathe. Water passes from the radiator to the coolant reserve tank and fort.

The car might not necessarily over-heat if the coolant reserve tank is broken, but it is advisable that you replace it to enable it serve its purpose within the operations of the car engine.

Good luck.

If the tank is part of the pressurized system, indicated by a pressure cap (the cap will nomally have the psi limit printed on the cap, typically about 15 psi) that screws on, your engine will loose coolant and over heat. if the cap snaps on or otherwise is not a preesure cap, the tank just holds coolant that is recovered and delivered to and from the cooling system due to expansion and contraction of the coolant from getting hot and cooling down. you still can lose enough coolant for the system to over heat. just be sure to check the coolant often when the engine is cool

The reservoir tank is the highest point in the cooling system,it is to prevent air from entering the system when cooling down, also making the coolant temperature higher than boiling point with a pressure cap,if its broke, fix it asap.or you will overheat causing expensive fixes later.

1999 chevy express van.I have two hoses that run off of my reserve tank one of the goes to the radiator. and another hose that looks like it goes on the acumlator

From the reserve tank, one hose should go to the radiator and the other should be for overflow. Sometimes that one goes to an accumulator, sometimes its left dangling cause its just there to drain any excess fluid from expansion in a hot system. Depends on the vehicle. If its in an enclosed system or plugged you would get an excess of back pressure which would further heat up the coolant and inhibit flow. Just leave it there. If it pukes coolant when hot then its doing its job. Don't overflow your reserve tank.

Making a clanging sound started up and smoke came throught the vents, belt came off and liquid was all over

sounds to me someone didn't have the required coolent added to the engine, it has frozen and busted your engine block, waterpump, etc. The smoke is probably steam from the busted heatercore. Expect to replace most everything that is engine coolent related, possibly even the engine if the block has busted.

I fill the coolent resevore up and radiator go for a bit of a drive and the coolent isnt comeing out of the resevore into the raidiator wat could it be

why do you keep filling it up? If you overfill either the radiator or the reservoir it is as bad as not filling up...
Is there a temperature issue?
If the reservoir is NOT using, or appearing to 'use' any coolant.. then that is a good thing.. it IS a reserve tank, a reservoir.. tank for overspill and should never be more than 1/3 full..

You do it thru the overflow-reserve tank. That is the pressure cap normally found on the radiator.

Oil in water reserve tank

you checked your water in the reserve tank and there is water in it? well awesome man good to know!! ha ha there is water in mine too,

no but seriously i think you mean oil right?
if you have oil in your antifreeze reserve tank it usually means you have a blown head gasket, and that you will need to replace,
take it to a mechanics shop you trust as it will be not a cheap fix because they will need to take off the head to get to it.

Coolant

Check ebay for an aftermarket one or similar....hit the junkyard too. Save yourself some cash from having to go to the dealership.

The reservoir is meant to catch the coolant as it overheats in the radiator after it comes back from flowing through the engine. It is a good idea to have the reservoir because after it catches the fluid from expanding, it cools down and gets sucked back into the radiator. So yes, you need a reservoir.
