I have the same problem with my 03 Focus hatchback! Someone stoppedme yesterday to tell me that they looked like they were always on when i was driving but when i was in "Park" they worked... This particular driver was also driving a focus hatchback and asked me if my Cruise Control was working.. It actually was not and he told me the same thing happened with his focus. He said it was a wire attached to the back brake lights that had broken. I have not yet gotten it fixed. has anyone else had this problem?

If it only lights up the tail lights when its in RND21 but works correct in park then I believe your looking at a internal shorted brake shift interlock on the shifter back feeding and sending power back to the brake switch and turning the lights on. I would access the shifter assembly and depin the wire I am pointing to and reconnect the connector and see if the brake light issue stops. You will need to manually shift it out of park or temporarily attach this wire to get it out of park for the test.

My shifter won't shift. It seems like it is locked. I press on the brake but the little knob on the shifter that you need to push in to engage the shifter won't budge.

I'm assuming you're talking about an automatic transmission. When you press on the brake pedal, you engage a switch under the pedal which turns your brake lights on, and also engages a solenoid in the shifter which allows you to shift the car out of Park.

That said, are your brake lights working? If your brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal, chances are the shifter solenoid/actuator is broken. If your brake lights DO NOT come on when you press the brake pedal, chances are you have a faulty brake light switch.

Regardless which part is to blame, these are pretty simple and inexpensive repairs.

Good luck, and if this helped, please rate my answer!

My 2001 ford focus is stuck in park, stepping on brake, does not release it from park, and brake lights are not working.........

Without the brake lights working the shift interlock can't release. Turn the key just off the "locked" position and you should be able to shift to neutral and start the engine then shift to drive or reverse. Just don't shift back into park until you are parking the car to leave it.

2003 Ford Focus ZX-5: Brake lights stuck on

Check the lights on the 3rd brake light. If the bulbs are out the brake lights will remain on when in gear, but work properly when in park. I had the same problem had to go to Napa to get bulbs (5) and now all is fine.

03 explorer indicates wrong gear

if the shifter is still firm in its location, the neutral safety switch is located on the left side of the transmission. you can loosen it and relalign it to read the correct gear.
