Jaguar xj6 break light cancels signal

I have an '89 XJ6 and the following happens when using left turn signal and break:

* Left turn signal on and it works and sounds fine
* Apply the brakes and the signal sound starts clicking faster
* The faulty bulb indicator light goes on
* The rear signal is not blinking but the brake light is on
* The front left signal is blinking normally
* Take the brakes off and the signal and sound go back to normal
* No break, Left rear turn signal works normally.

If I swap in a different rear brake/signal board I get the same results as above

All bulbs and fuses have been checked and are working fine.

Swapped the relay box same result.

Cleaned all contacts, including ground contacts, re-attached, same problem.

Checked wires for a break or bare spot, all fine.

I'm at my wits end. Right side works fine. Its only the left-rear that is effected.

Wouldn't the turn signal switch effect both the front and rear lights though?

The JX6 has a seprate relay box for each turn signal / break / fog / reverse / parking lights. 4 total, Is why i thought perhaps it was a bad relay box. the relay boxes are 400.00 each.

tapping the relay box would cause it to 'start' working for about 3 seconds, and is why i thought it was the relay box originally. Replaced it and the same problem happened.

Thought it could be a ground issue when i noticed the back left side running light wasn't coming on, so I cleaned all the ground contacts, and it still didn't come on, cleaned the plug for the running light bulb and it works now.

Cleaned all the connector plugs for the Relay box, thinking maybe there was a bad contact, but the problem with the break canceling the turn signal in the left rear still persists.

Also... If I turn on the headlights, I get a 'bulb failure' in the dash, same as applying the break, but the turn signal still works until I apply the break. My brother-in-law also informed me that when the headlights are on the left rear break light comes on aprox. 1-2 seconds after the right one does. when the headlights are off, they both come on at the same time.

so... it does seem to be something directly related to the turn / break for the left rear.

The turn signal switch is 389.00 and would hate to have to buy this to replace it just to find out it doesn't resolve the problem.

Do you have any other possible suggestions that may be the problem?

found the problem - it was with the relay boxes, apparently this is a fairly common problem, being two identical relay boxes had the same issue. there are two circuit boards inside, held together with snap joints. The sodder joints on the snap joints were broken, resoddered and problem resolved. Hope this helps anyone else that comes across the same problem, simple fix, and less costly then buying new relay boxes arg...

Replace the turn signal switch. Bad contact inside causing a crossing of the circuits. When the turn signal is applied it should open the brake light circuit allowing for just the signal to work. Doesn't sound like the switch is doing it's job.

No heater controls no blower or ac fuses good 89 jaguar xj6

My 93 xj6 doesn't blow or anything but I found that if I kick the blower under the string wheel. It comes on. Then it's blowing cold on the dash and hot out the center counsel. Where do I kick to fix that? There are buttons that light up by the steering wheel. That look like the seat heater button. Is there a way to choose to make the thing blow cold in front and hot in back? 989-657-2563

Where is the starter motor located on a 1985 Jaguar XJ6?

The starter is on the left side of the engine, near the firewall, kind of below the battery. You can follow the positive side of the battery cable to the starter.

Brake light out

You've got a broken or disconnected wire somewhere. Get a multimeter & check you have voltage on both sides of the fuse. If that's good you know you've got juice running out to the tail light. Remove the bulb & check for voltage in the socket. Chances are you have 20 years of corrosion behind the socket & it's dirty. Either way, you problem is a disconnected or corroded wire.
