88 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, 4x4 has a humming noise from the rear end which gets louder with acceleration. Goes away when not on the throttle. Checked pinion nut and rear grease. Any other ideas?
Sounds like the rear end itself, most likely if u have high mileage.
Testimonial: "That is absolutely my thoughts as well.I was hoping not to hear that, but was expecting that. It has 215k on the drivetrain, so I guess it is time for replacement. This is my first 4 wheel drive, so I am learning as I go. Thank you for your time and insight. Just have to find an affordable place in DFW to get the gears."
It could also be a wheel bearing. I just replaced one on my 88 Jeep Cherokee about a month ago. Mine sounded like the differential itself when driving but I isolated the problem to the right rear wheel bearing and repaired it myself, other than a machine shop pressing of the new bearing onto the axle. Out of pocket expenses was less than $75.

The only other thing I could think of is what type of tire tread do you have some times the humming could be from the rotation of the tires.
