Remove/replace starter sloenoid

Do I have to pull the starter to remove/replace starter sloenoid on my 1985 Jag XJ6 VDP? Getting nothing at key switch, starter doesn't engage, replaced the starter relay....no luck. Fan motor remains on when key is pulled out, have to disconnect battery to prevent power drain. Thinking I have a sloenoid problem?

Your Ignition Switch is bad here is how to replace it
The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible. On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

  • Remove the ignition switch wiring harness.
  • Unbolt it from its position.
  • Bolt the new switch into position.
  • Attach the witing harness.

Starter doesn't engage

Year make and model ?
Normally you have power to the large post from the battery, and then power on the small wire from the key switch when it is in the start position. The small wire energizes the solenoid and as the starter spins the bendix gear extends out.

I just had my starter replaced on my 85 Jaguar XJ6 and sometimes when i go to start it, it makes that sound like when you turn the key and the car is already started and sometimes the starter wont engage...

either the starter is not engaging all the way or there is a bad spot on the ring gear, remove the starter and turn the engine and check the ring gear if its good then look at the starter

Doesn't start- Thought starter was bad replaced and still nothing -won't turn over?Battery Good Checked all fuses and starter that was replaced is good! Turn ignition key and nothing? Selinoid not even...

The ignition switch attached to the column is probally bad, check the small wire to the sloenoid for battery when the key is turned to the start postion, if no battery, your not getting power from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid.
