94 Toyota Tercel dies when put in gear

1994 Toyota Tercel. When it is running, it runs really smoothly. In park or neutral. Once the transmission is in Drive or Reverse, it runs rough and then dies. Pulled codes and got a code 31, which I believe has to do with the MAP sensor. Haven't replaced it as not totally sure that is the problem. Now code 31 is gone and code 51 is being displayed. But only when the transmission is Drive or Reverse. Not neutral like the service manual states. In neutral the Check engine light just flashes. No pauses or anything. On off on off.... And doesn't stop either. Have tried 2 different computers. Still the same thing.

I can put my 1994 toyota tercel in gear without pushing in the clutch, what could the problems be?

Do you mean with the engine off? If so, that is normal. The clutch just allows you to disconnect from engine when it running. With the clutch released and engine running the gears are spinning all the time. When in neutral, the chain of gears to the final drive is incomplete. When you engage a gear you are completing a chain of gear connections to the wheels. If engine is running, you will grind gears untill you press clutch, making a temporary break in the chain, allowing the gears to stop spinning and you to engage one.

You can infact use 1st gear as a kind of parking brake as it holds the car from rolling (in most cases) , with engine OFF, - BUT this is not advised as the only parking brake.

94 buick park ave runs great but with a light load it shakes, accelerates good and in park or neutral is smooth changed plugs and wires

Several possibilities having to do with the torque converter clutch and TCC solenoid:

1. Replace transmission fluid, use a synthetic Dex VI, do a complete flush with pan removal and filter replacement

2. Check all grounds related to the transmission control solenoids, clean them and ensure good electrical contact.

3. Rebuild transmission, the TCC friction material is worn out.

Transmission won't engage in Toyota Tercel

pop off the cap on your clutch reservoir, if it's empty fill it up, leave the cap off, and then pump the clutch 20 times to try to get air out, that should work.
